To survive night waves in Thronefall - A Little Kingdom, take direct control of the battlefield by using the monarch to pull enemy aggro away from vulnerable buildings, locking allied squads in place at fortified chokepoints, and eliminating high-priority siege units before they breach your perimeter.
Pulling Aggro and Kiting Wave Formations
The monarch moves faster than standard ground swarms, making your character the most flexible tool for controlling wave movement. Enemies naturally target the nearest economic building, wall, or Town Center. However, entering an enemy's detection range or striking them directly forces them to redirect their focus onto the monarch.
To manage incoming waves safely:
- Ride toward spawn markers right as night begins to intercept the lead units.
- Strike the front ranks to draw aggro and gather enemies into a concentrated group.
- Lead the chasing pack in wide, curved loops around your perimeter so allied archers and splash towers can hit multiple clustered targets.
- Avoid turning sharply back toward the trailing swarm, which risks trapping the monarch in melee hits.
Anchoring Army Squads with Hold Position Commands
Allied units left in follow mode trail behind the monarch, dragging them through explosive bursts, ranged volleys, and enemy cleave damage. Use the hold command to secure your troops at specific defensive positions rather than letting them chase across the field.
Place melee squads directly behind gates or narrow chokepoints so enemies must funnel through before engaging. Position ranged units further back on elevated terrain or behind barricades where they can fire without drawing melee strikes. When a wave attacks multiple sides of the map, divide your units beforehand and anchor them in their respective lanes. This allows the monarch to move freely as a roving reinforcement without pulling stationary defenders away from their posts.
| Unit Positioning Tactic | Primary Purpose | Common Execution Mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Wall Chokepoint Anchor | Funnels swarms directly into stationary melee blocks | Placing units outside the gate where towers cannot protect them |
| Ranged Backline Nest | Delivers uninterrupted ranged damage without drawing melee focus | Placing archers too close to gates where enemy splash damage hits them |
| Split-Lane Hold | Holds multiple approach lanes simultaneously during split attacks | Dragging all defenders across the map when switching lanes |
| Monarch Kiting Loop | Clusters swarms beneath overlapping defensive tower fire | Cutting turns too tight and allowing fast chasers to surround the monarch |
Neutralizing High-Threat Siege and Explosive Units
Defensive towers and stationary units automatically fire at the nearest hostile target, which often leaves dangerous backline attackers free to shell your structures. The monarch must personally target and neutralize high-threat units before they reach effective range:
- Catapults and Long-Range Siege: These weapons outrange stationary defenses and will dismantle walls and towers from safety. Ride around front-line swarms to attack siege units directly.
- Explosive Units: Detonating near allied walls or troop clusters causes catastrophic damage. Clip their aggro radius and dash away immediately to trigger their detonation timers early, or eliminate them at range so their blast damages adjacent enemy units instead.
Managing Monarch Health and Tactical Retreats
The monarch cannot regenerate health while taking damage. A short delay without taking hits is required before passive health recovery begins. Staying in combat at low health risks a lethal hit and triggers a punishing respawn timer, during which you cannot redirect aggro, intercept siege weapons, or reposition squads.
When health drops to critical levels, disengage from the front line immediately and retreat behind your inner defenses. Use this recovery window to check wall health and monitor lane pressure. Re-enter combat only after your health bar has recovered enough to withstand stray projectile damage.
Fallback Defense and Strategic Sacrifices
Attempting to protect every outlying building often results in overextension and fatal monarch positioning. Distant economic structures, such as isolated mills and houses, can be sacrificed if defending them compromises your main force. Destroyed economic buildings automatically rebuild the following morning for a minor gold fee, whereas a destroyed Town Center causes an instant defeat.
When an outer wall falls, issue a hold command to pull stationed troops back to secondary walls or the inner perimeter surrounding the Town Center. Funneling your surviving units, defensive towers, and monarch into a tighter defensive perimeter concentrates your firepower to eliminate the remaining breach.

Can you add more details about strategy in a future update?
This saved me time in the early game.
The tips are practical and easy to follow.
I wish I had read this before upgrading the wrong thing.
