To unlock the Mine in Vikingard, expand your settlement territory to the dilapidated mine entrance during early chapter progression, pay the required food rations, and defeat the occupying hostile squad. Once cleared, the entrance opens a subterranean interface where you conquer deeper shafts, station Hersirs to extract iron ore, and fuel equipment upgrades at your forge.
Unlocking the Mine Entrance
Access to the Mine becomes available as your chiefdom reclaims outer settlement ground past the main village area. You can access the restoration screen once your Mead Hall reaches the designated chapter milestone:
- Locate the damaged mine scaffold on your settlement perimeter.
- Verify that your settlement meets the current chapter milestone requirement.
- Submit the required food rations to clear the physical debris.
- Win the preliminary combat clearance against the hostile marauders guarding the cavern.
Clearing the entrance immediately converts the node into an active subterranean zone. Begin extraction immediately, as unworked mines yield zero passive ore.
Defeating Shaft Guardians
The Mine is divided into progressive depth tiers. Deeper floors yield higher hourly outputs and better resource quality, but each floor requires defeating a guardian team.
Subterranean encounters rely on compact squad formations rather than wide battlefield skirmishes:
- Frontline Vanguard: Position high-defense Hersirs with health-boosting gear in front to absorb concentrated single-target strikes.
- Rear Damage Dealers: Place high-attack burst damage Hersirs behind your frontline to eliminate opposing offensive units before their skill meters charge.
- Might Checks: Compare your total team Might directly against the floor guardian's rating. If your squad falls below the requirement, level your main combat carry rather than burning recovery supplies on failed attempts.
Every cleared floor permanently raises your base resource extraction potential.
Assigning Hersirs to Mining Nodes
Clearing a shaft unlocks extraction slots. Base output scales with the specific attributes of the Hersir stationed at each node.
| Assignment Factor | Mechanical Effect | Best Practice |
|---|---|---|
| Hersir Aptitude | Multiplies base ore produced per hour | Assign Hersirs carrying gathering or engineering traits |
| Hersir Level and Might | Increases the ore cart storage limit | Station higher-level Hersirs to extend offline accumulation time |
| Shaft Depth | Improves baseline drop rates and ore tiers | Place your best economic Hersirs on the deepest cleared floor |
| Storage Timer | Halts production entirely once capacity is reached | Collect accumulated ore at least twice daily |
Stationing a Hersir in a mine slot does not lock them out of campaign stages or arena battles. You can safely assign your strongest secondary Hersirs to top-tier mining nodes without weakening your active combat roster.
Early Ore Investment Priority
Iron ore feeds weapon forging and armor crafting. To maximize account progress, spend your early ore in a strict order:
- Primary Carry Weapon: Pour early metal into your main damage dealer's weapon to accelerate campaign clears and defeat deeper mine bosses.
- Lead Vanguard Armor: Direct secondary ore into protective gear for your main tank so your squad survives long enough to trigger combat skills.
- Reserve Stock: Avoid hoarding raw ore in your inventory. Convert it directly into combat equipment upgrades as soon as collections finish to steadily increase your settlement's overall Might.

Good guide for Vikingard players. The strategy part was useful.
I tried this today and it worked better than my old setup.
Nice guide. I am checking the other Vikingard articles next.
I wish I had read this before upgrading the wrong thing.
