To clear stages and prevent full horde wipes in Zombie Night Terror, you must direct movement using Overlord checkpoints, breach fortified choke points with Tanks and Exploders, and replenish your DNA pool by biting unarmed humans. Basic walkers move forward in a straight line until they hit a wall or drop off a ledge. Maintaining control over their movement and spending mutation resources efficiently determines whether you reach stage extraction zones.
Directing the Swarm with Overlords
Because basic zombies cannot turn around on their own, an unguided horde will walk straight into lethal hazards, elevator shafts, or open drop-offs. Mutating a walker into an Overlord locks that unit in place to establish a permanent directional guide.
- Directional Control: Set the Overlord to turn passing zombies around or send them forward. Place Overlords at the edges of drop-offs, stairwells, and shafts before your lead zombies step into the hazard.
- Horde Compaction: Set an Overlord to block movement entirely. This pools wandering zombies into a dense group, allowing you to release an overwhelming rush through fortified positions rather than trickling individual units into enemy line of fire.
- Unit Conservation: Creating an Overlord sacrifices an active attacker. If you have fewer than three zombies remaining, do not mutate your vanguard into an anchor. Let the front walker scout forward and mutate a trailing unit instead.
Breaching Barriers with Exploders and Tanks
Reinforced doors, cracked walls, and breakable floors prevent your horde from reaching survivors. Breaching these obstacles requires spending DNA on specialized mutation units.
- Locate Destructible Structures: Inspect walls and ceilings for wooden planks or visible cracks before assigning mutations.
- Isolate the Breaching Unit: Use an Overlord to hold back the main pack and send a single walker toward the obstacle.
- Detonate on Impact: Trigger the Exploder mutation the moment the zombie contacts the barrier. Detonating early wastes DNA without breaking the structure, while delaying leaves the unit vulnerable to incoming gunfire.
When barricades are defended by armed humans, deploy a Tank before breaching. Tanks absorb heavy projectile damage, knock down barriers, and disrupt firing lines. Once the Tank draws defensive fire, follow up with an Exploder or fast runners to eliminate the staggered defenders before they recover.
Countering Armed Humans
Direct frontal charges against armed survivors result in heavy casualties because ranged weapons stagger and kill standard zombies before they close the distance. Bypass line-of-sight defenses through alternate paths such as ceiling grates, ventilation ducts, and drop-ins.
| Enemy Type | Primary Threat | Counter Tactic |
|---|---|---|
| Pistol Guards | Steady single-target fire | Swarm with runners or attack from blind spots |
| Shotgunners | Wide-spread burst damage | Absorb blasts with a Tank or breach from the ceiling |
| Assault Rifles | Rapid continuous fire | Flank from behind through vents and upper walkways |
| Barricaded Civilians | Fortified firing positions | Use Jumpers to clear cover or blast walls with Exploders |
When a flanking route is unavailable, mutate a Jumper. Jumping lets the lead zombie leap over incoming projectiles and close into melee range, disabling the shooter's ability to fire.
Managing DNA and Vertical Drops
DNA limits how many mutations you can trigger in each stage. Biting an unarmed civilian converts that target into a walker and refunds DNA. Whenever you enter rooms with mixed populations, spread the infection to unarmed targets first before using explosive abilities that destroy bodies without granting bite returns. When an Overlord's checkpoint becomes obsolete after the horde advances, recycle or sacrifice the unit if the stage permits to recoup spent resources.
Monitor vertical drops carefully. Falls exceeding standard landing heights kill walkers on impact. To bypass lethal drops, use Jumpers to clear wide gaps horizontally, or drop an Overlord onto intermediate ledges to break the fall distance for the rest of the swarm.

Nice guide. I am checking the other Zombie Night Terror articles next.
Can you add more details about strategy in a future update?
I tried this today and it worked better than my old setup.
This saved me time in the early game.
