To eliminate armed survivors and police officers in Zombie Night Terror, stop individual zombies from trickling into open corridors. Instead, place an Overlord just outside the enemy's horizontal line of sight to gather a dense pack of infected, then release them together so your trailing units can bite the defender during their reload delay. Alternatively, use an Exploder on the floor above to breach the ceiling and drop directly onto the shooter.
Armed Defender Combat Mechanics
Unlike unarmed civilians who flee, armed humans stand their ground and fire the moment an infected unit enters their straight horizontal sightline. Handguns and police firearms can kill ordinary zombies in one or two hits, while bullet knockback pushes advancing infected backward and stalls melee attacks.
Exploiting the limits of defender behavior allows you to clear these choke points with minimal losses:
- Horizontal aim only: Defenders shoot along flat lines. They cannot aim upward through ceilings, downward through floors, or diagonally across platforms.
- Reload delays: After discharging several rounds, armed humans pause through a reload animation. This pause is your primary window to close distance and infect them.
- Turnaround latency: Armed survivors look toward sound and frontal movement. If approached from behind, they cannot rotate quickly enough to stop a melee attack before being bitten.
Setting Up Swarm Ambushes with Overlords
Feeding zombies into a guarded room one by one will deplete your entire horde. To break through a defender covering a doorway, pool your zombies together before entering the room.
- Deploy an Overlord outside the entrance: Place an Overlord mutation right outside the doorway or stairwell, setting their directional arrow back toward your own area.
- Cluster your zombies: Let four to six infected gather in this loop until they form a dense, overlapping cluster.
- Release the swarm: Switch the Overlord’s direction toward the enemy room or convert the Overlord into a moving unit.
The concentrated mob will surge forward at once. Although the guard’s initial shots will drop the front one or two zombies, the sheer number of bodies exhausts the defender's magazine. Trailing zombies can then close the distance during the reload cycle to deliver a lethal bite.
Breaching Ceilings to Bypass Hallway Sightlines
Charging frontally down long hallways with deep sightlines often costs too many casualties. When destructible floorboards sit above an armed post, route a zombie along the upper floor and detonate it using the Exploder mutation.
| Infiltration Method | Tactical Advantage | Resource Cost | Best Application |
|---|---|---|---|
| Frontal Swarm Charge | Overwhelms defenders quickly without structural destruction | Loses 1–2 zombies to incoming gunfire | Solitary guards in short rooms |
| Vertical Ceiling Breach | Drops zombies into point-blank range, avoiding horizontal sightlines | Costs DNA and sacrifices one zombie to detonate | Shotgunners and police covering long corridors |
| Rear Flank Ambush | Disables defenders before they can turn and fire | Requires side routes or wall breaches | Guards positioned behind fortified single doors |
Because defenders cannot aim upward, falling zombies suffer zero damage during descent. They land directly in melee range, neutralizing the guard before a shot is fired.
DNA Management and Civilian Separation
Every Overlord redirection and Exploder detonation draws from your stage DNA pool. While converting an armed defender refunds DNA upon their death, spending multiple mutations on a single kill creates a net resource deficit that can stall later stage progression. Keep mutations to the minimum required to break each defensive position.
Before attacking armed units, check whether unarmed civilians share the room:
- Herd civilians away first: Panicking humans can body-block your infected or draw zombies into guard crossfire prematurely.
- Convert civilians in dead ends: Direct unarmed targets into side rooms to safely increase your total numbers.
- Absorb bullet fire with numbers: Use your expanded zombie pool as expendable front-line cover when finally committing the horde against the armed guards.

Nice guide. I am checking the other Zombie Night Terror articles next.
This guide answered the exact question I had.
I tried this today and it worked better than my old setup.
Can you add more details about strategy in a future update?
