To win with the Giant Ice Wizard Minions deck in Clash Royale, defend incoming pushes cheaply on your side of the arena, then place a Giant at the river in front of your surviving defenders to lead a counter-push.
The Core Counter-Push Strategy
Unlike dedicated beatdown decks that routinely build pushes from behind the King Tower during single Elixir, this archetype operates as a counter-push control deck. Dropping an unsupported five-Elixir Giant at the bridge early in the match drains your resources and exposes your opposite lane to fast attacks.
Instead, let your opponent commit troops into your territory first. Dismantle their push using the Ice Wizard's slowing effect and the Minions' high damage. Because these defenders often survive with partial health, dropping the Giant at the river directly ahead of them forces your opponent to answer a high-health tank while your surviving backline deals continuous damage.
Defensive Roles and Placement
Defense relies on combining crowd control with aerial damage to eliminate ground and air threats before they reach your Crown Tower.
| Card | Defensive Role | Key Placement Rule |
|---|---|---|
| Ice Wizard | Slows movement and attack speed by 35%; clusters swarms | Place centrally, 2–3 tiles in front of the King Tower to pull units into range of both Princess Towers. |
| Minions | High DPS against ground tanks, Mini P.E.K.K.A, and Balloons | Deploy directly above enemy targets after they lock onto a building or the Ice Wizard. |
| Giant | Emergency body-block and kiting tank | Place in the center to pull heavy hitters away from low-health towers in emergency situations. |
Keep your Minions slightly offset from the Ice Wizard. Spacing them apart prevents opponents from hitting both defensive units with a single small spell like Zap or Arrows. If your opponent casts Fireball on your Minions, your Ice Wizard remains healthy to slow down remaining attackers.
Executing the River Counter-Push
Once your Ice Wizard and Minions neutralize an incoming push, check your Elixir advantage. If you traded positively and your troops survived, drop your Giant at the bridge.
Maintain proper unit spacing so defensive spells cannot eliminate the entire push:
- Lead Tank: Place the Giant at the bridge boundary so he crosses into enemy territory immediately and absorbs Princess Tower fire.
- Air Support: Allow Minions to trail roughly two tiles behind the Giant so they do not outrun him before he draws defensive targeting.
- Control Backline: Keep the Ice Wizard trailing behind the river to slow down defending swarms like Skeleton Army and Goblin Gang or reduce the attack speed of defensive buildings.
This formation protects your surviving damage dealers while forcing the opponent to spend Elixir on an advancing tank.
Spell Support and Clear Priorities
Backing up your push with spells keeps your Giant moving toward the Crown Tower:
- Light Utility (Zap): Use small reset spells to interrupt charging threats like Inferno Dragon or Inferno Tower. This resets their damage ramp and keeps the Giant alive longer. Small spells also clear weak swarms like Bats or Skeletons instantly.
- Medium Removal (Fireball or Poison): Reserve medium spells for defensive troop clusters placed near the Crown Tower, such as Musketeer, Wizard, or Electro Wizard. Damaging both the defender and the Crown Tower clears the lane for your Giant and Minions while generating chip damage.
Matchup Game Plans
Adjust your Giant deployments depending on the opponent's archetype:
Versus Fast Cycle and Bridge Spam
Against Hog Rider or quick bridge attacks, place the Ice Wizard early to slow the runner and deploy Minions to shred it before it reaches the tower. If your opponent has full Elixir and a defensive building ready in cycle, do not invest five Elixir into a counter-push Giant. Instead, bank your Elixir lead and cycle back to your defensive core.
Versus Heavy Beatdown
When facing slow, heavy tanks like Golem or Lava Hound, apply opposite-lane pressure. If the opponent commits a heavy tank behind their King Tower during double Elixir, immediately drop your Giant and Minions at the bridge in the opposite lane. This forces them to spend Elixir defending rather than building a lethal push behind their tank. Use the Ice Wizard and utility spells on your side of the board to stall their isolated tank while your counter-push threatens their opposite Crown Tower.

Good guide for Clash Royale players. The strategy part was useful.
This saved me time in the early game.
I tried this today and it worked better than my old setup.
Can you add more details about strategy in a future update?
