In Dome Keeper, every piece of Iron, Water, and Cobalt tethered to your engineer reduces your flight speed, turning the journey up the central shaft into a dangerous race against incoming waves. To protect your dome, release your haul the moment a wave threatens your return time, stage resources at central intersections, and upgrade early Laser Dome damage before investing heavily in secondary carry tiers.
How Haul Weight Affects Movement and Timing
Carrying minerals imposes an immediate drag penalty that severely limits your vertical ascent. Horizontal movement through flat tunnels experiences minimal drag, but lifting minerals against gravity through the vertical mine shaft amplifies the weight of each item. Towing multiple resource chunks with a base jetpack slows your climb to a crawl, multiplying your transit time several times over.
Your return window is determined by the wave gauge at the bottom of the screen. Hostiles spawn and attack the dome immediately once the gauge fills. Because manual control is required to aim the laser and eliminate incoming threats, arriving late leaves your base undefended against initial strikes. When the attack timer is more than two-thirds depleted, carrying more than one or two minerals from deep layers will delay your arrival until after enemies have already begun damaging the hull.
When to Drop Resources Mid-Shaft
Dumping carried resources is always preferable to sustaining dome damage. Structural repairs consume scarce Cobalt that cannot be recovered easily, whereas dropped minerals remain completely safe.
Use these rules to decide when to release your load:
- The Lower Shaft Release: If the wave alarm activates while you are in the lower half of the mine, drop all cargo immediately to ascend at maximum speed.
- Staggered Jettisoning: If you are in the upper third of the shaft with slight time remaining, drop half of your carried resources onto a ledge to regain partial speed rather than dropping everything.
- Cobalt Exception: Persist in dragging Cobalt under pressure only if you are already near the top of the shaft and need the resource for urgent hull maintenance.
- Post-Wave Recovery: Dropped minerals never despawn, decay, or get targeted by standard ground creeps. Any ore left on the shaft floor can be safely retrieved after the attack ends.
Staging Depots at Shaft Intersections
Dragging minerals across long horizontal branches while simultaneously climbing the main shaft creates severe travel delays. To streamline deep mining, dig wide junctions where horizontal side tunnels meet the main vertical shaft and use the junction floor as a staging depot.
During quiet periods between waves, shuttle discovered Iron and Water from the ends of horizontal tunnels into the junction opening and drop them in a pile. Once several resource chunks are gathered at the shaft edge, dedicate a separate hauling trip to lift the stockpile into the dome. Staging prevents you from being caught deep inside a horizontal branch when an attack begins.
Carry Strength vs. Laser Dome Upgrade Priority
Investing early Iron into Carry Strength provides little value if your weapon cannot clear incoming waves before your shield collapses. A base laser can handle early isolated flyers and solitary ground monsters, but enemy density quickly increases.
| Upgrade | Primary Advantage | Tactical Limitation | Recommended Priority |
|---|---|---|---|
| Laser Power | Speeds up kill times and protects shield integrity | Consumes Iron needed for mobility upgrades | Purchase before the third or fourth combat wave |
| Laser Tracking Speed | Retargets quickly between flyers and ground enemies | Does not increase base damage output | Upgrade alongside Power as fast flyers appear |
| Carry Strength | Allows hauling small mineral clusters without stalling | Does not defend the dome if you misjudge timing | Unlock level one early; postpone higher tiers |
| Jetpack Speed | Accelerates empty-handed transit and repositioning | Struggles under heavy loads without Carry Strength | Complement with Carry Strength in the mid-game |
The most reliable progression path balances initial mobility against wave thresholds:
- Unlock the first Drill upgrade to break through standard rock strata.
- Purchase the initial Carry Strength tier to tow up to four items without completely stalling your ascent.
- Divert all spare Iron into Laser Power and tracking speed until your weapon reliably eliminates waves without suffering hull damage.
- Invest in higher Carry Strength tiers and Jetpack Speed only after defensive damage output is stable.

I tried this today and it worked better than my old setup.
The tips are practical and easy to follow.
Good guide for Dome Keeper players. The base building part was useful.
I wish I had read this before upgrading the wrong thing.
