To beat the Logistical Nightmare challenge mode in Dome Keeper, stop hauling resources manually. Severe encumbrance penalties in this mode slow your ascent to a crawl, leaving your dome exposed to incoming attack waves. Instead, dig straight vertical shafts so gravity can drop loose ores into collection points below, spend early iron on drill upgrades rather than carry capacity, and rely on automated logistics gadgets to move materials up to the dome.
Dig Straight Vertical Shafts for Gravity Drops
Carrying multiple chunks of iron, cobalt, or water triggers harsh movement penalties that make returning to the dome before combat waves hit nearly impossible. Bypassing manual hauling requires using gravity to move loose materials:
- Dig a straight vertical trunk line directly down from your central dome access point.
- Carve short, horizontal spurs into side resource veins rather than angling tunnels upward or downward.
- Drill loose resource chunks free and knock or push them out into the main shaft.
- Let the resources drop straight to the floor of the shaft to pool in a centralized staging pit.
- Return upward unburdened whenever the combat alarm sounds, leaving the ore stockpile below until automated transport is established.
Straight shafts keep loose items from getting snagged on ledges. Because your keeper remains unladen, you retain full jetpack speed to reach the weapon terminal before flying and burrowing enemies reach the dome glass.
Upgrade Drills and Jetpack Speed First
Do not spend early iron on carry capacity upgrades. Because hauling materials manually carries crippling speed debuffs, carry capacity provides severely diminished returns in this challenge mode.
Focus initial iron spending on Tier 1 and Tier 2 drill upgrades. Higher drill tiers cut through dense rock layers quickly, exposing resource clusters faster and generating the resources needed for base defenses. Pair drill upgrades with baseline jetpack thruster upgrades. Higher flight speed ensures rapid transit between the dome and deep mining faces while unencumbered.
Automate Hauling with Underground Gadgets
Search the first two subterranean layers aggressively to locate gadget chambers. Securing a logistics gadget removes the burden of manual transport entirely.
| Gadget | Primary Role | Upgrade Priority |
|---|---|---|
| Lift | Moves pooled ore stacks up the central vertical shaft automatically. | Load capacity and orb movement speed. |
| Teleporter | Transports resource bundles instantly or teleports the keeper to the dome. | Transfer speed and portal capacity. |
| Drone Yard | Dispatches drones into tunnels to collect and return stray loose ores. | Drone flight speed and active carrier count. |
Installing a Lift inside your primary vertical shaft allows you to drop mined ores directly into the lift field at the bottom, letting the energy orbs ferry resources into the dome automatically. If you find a Teleporter instead, place the remote pad directly in your deepest mining pit to fling heavy resource bundles straight to the surface.
Wave Timing and Base Defense
Because you cannot outrun incoming waves while encumbered, respect the wave sensor immediately:
- Drop held items instantly when the proximity alert flashes red. Do not attempt to haul a final cluster of iron to the surface.
- Ascend unburdened to take control of the defense console several seconds before enemies arrive.
- Upgrade weapon damage and tracking speed early to clear enemy waves before they can compromise dome integrity.
- Inspect hull and shield health immediately after clearing the wave, then descend back down the shaft to resume mining without idling at the surface.

I wish I had read this before upgrading the wrong thing.
This guide answered the exact question I had.
Good guide for Dome Keeper players. The strategy part was useful.
I tried this today and it worked better than my old setup.
