To prevent your account from stalling in Evony, stop mass-training mid-tier troops, keep your inventory resource boxes sealed until needed, and hoard premium upgrade materials like Blood of Ares and Refining Stones for endgame gear and generals. Long-term progression requires funneling your resources directly into building levels—specifically pushing toward Keep 35—rather than building a large, vulnerable standing army early.
Restrict Troop Training to Functional Utility
Training large quantities of tier 10, tier 11, and tier 12 troops before unlocking tier 13 and tier 14 units is a severe resource drain. Mid-tier armies consume vast amounts of food, lumber, stone, and ore that should fund Keep upgrades, yet they trade poorly against high-level attackers. During Server Wars or enemy rallies, bloated mid-tier armies take heavy casualties, resulting in massive hospital healing bills that drain your resource packs and speedups.
Prior to reaching high Keep levels, limit your recruitment to strictly functional roles:
- Gathering units: Train only enough low-tier cavalry or ground troops to keep all your gathering march queues fully deployed on resource tiles.
- Monster hunting: Maintain a single, optimized mounted march capable of clearing target bosses without incurring wounded soldiers.
- Layering bases: Build minimal layers of roughly 1,000 to 2,000 troops per tier to support combat mechanics rather than building bulk volume.
Every batch of mid-tier troops you train delays your Keep 33, 35, and 36 milestones. Defend your city with high-tier wall generals, debuff equipment, and tier 1 meat shields instead of expensive, fragile mid-tier units.
Keep Resource Boxes Sealed in Inventory
Never open resource chests directly into your city storage until you are ready to spend them. Keeping resources bagged protects your stockpile from enemy scouting, plundering, and passive troop consumption.
| Factor | Bagged Inventory Resources | Unbagged City Resources |
|---|---|---|
| Scout Visibility | Completely hidden on scout reports | Visible to hostile scouts |
| PvP Loss Risk | Safe from enemy plunder | 100% loss above Warehouse limits |
| Troop Upkeep | Not consumed by city upkeep | Steadily consumed by food upkeep |
| Event Utility | Can be saved for major events | Pressures you to spend prematurely |
Calculate the exact deficit required for your target building or research project. Open only the boxes needed to cover that cost, and immediately apply the resources to the project. This prevents food from draining below your training thresholds and protects your hoard if your Peace Shield drops.
Save Refining Stones and Blood of Ares for Endgame Assets
Refining Stones and Blood of Ares are gated materials that accumulate slowly. Spending them on intermediate gear or tavern generals creates long-term deficits when you unlock high-tier items.
- Refining Stones: Do not burn stones attempting to secure maximum percentage rolls on intermediate Dragon or basic Ares gear. Their attribute ceilings are far lower than Achaemenidae, Parthian, and Civilization sets. Save your stones to refine debuff gear and primary PvP equipment.
- Blood of Ares: General Ascending requires large amounts of Blood of Ares alongside general fragments. Never spend this currency on easily replaceable gold tavern officers. Reserve all Blood of Ares for dedicated duty generals and top-tier PvP commanders that anchor your main marches.
Optimize Subordinate Cities and Academy Research
Subordinate cities provide military debuffs and economic perks, but low-tier cities yield poor returns. Do not waste gems or subordinate city clues acquiring common white or green sub-cities. Save your clues to search for and contest historic purple and gold cities. Match your sub-city cultures to your current account focus:
- Russia: Increases in-city troop attack and enemy debuffs.
- Korea: Boosts gathering production across the board.
- Japan: Increases march attack values.
Equip all sub-city mayors with full Achaemenidae gear sets to stack debuffs against enemy troop attack, defense, and HP. In the Academy, max out the Advancement and Production trees to reduce your construction and research times before heavily investing in basic military trees. At Keep 33 and above, pivot your research priority toward Military debuffs and city-wide Alliance trees.
Synchronize Spending With Consuming Return Events
Upgrading major structures or researching expensive nodes during off-weeks forfeits valuable event rewards. Evony cycles regular Consuming Return events that refund a portion of spent resources, speedups, and materials.
Gather, farm, and store all resources in your item bag for several weeks between cycles. When an active Resource or Speedup Consuming Return event launches, start your major Keep upgrades and Academy research projects at once. Collecting the event milestones returns thousands of gems, additional resource boxes, and extra Blood of Ares to fuel your next progression tier.

Nice guide. I am checking the other Evony articles next.
Can you add more details about resources in a future update?
I wish I had read this before upgrading the wrong thing.
Good guide for Evony players. The resources part was useful.
