To chip down and dismantle an enemy T1 mounted troop trap in Evony, deploy high-buff ranged attack marches that exploit combat targeting priorities against cavalry. Structured ranged strikes paired with aggressive mounted debuffs systematically whittle away the defender's meat wall, turning defensive point-trading into an offensive advantage during Server vs. Server (SvS) and Battlefield events.

Why Ranged Marches Counter T1 Cavalry

In Evony combat, archers naturally prioritize mounted units. Because mounted troops have high base speed, they charge forward during early combat rounds. High-tier ranged units focus their primary damage output directly into this advancing cavalry line, eliminating low-tier mounted units before they overrun your march.

Sending ground or mounted marches into a T1 cavalry trap causes disproportionate attacker losses:

  • Ground marches counter archers but move too slowly to withstand hundreds of millions of low-tier cavalry reinforced by flat-refine defense.
  • Mounted marches suffer extreme attrition in mirror matches against high-volume flat stats, trading expensive high-tier cavalry for cheap low-tier defenders.

Pure ranged marches remain the only viable method for shredding massive T1 cavalry walls.

Scouting the Target and Debuff Requirements

Attacking a T1 trap without prior scouting risks heavy point losses. Traps rely on flat attack, defense, and HP refines—often rolled on dragon or Achaemenidae gear—to make T1 units hit far above their tier. Before striking, inspect the defender's battle reports, wall general, and subordinate cities.

Scouting MetricDangerous Trap IndicatorSafe Chipping Threshold
T1 Mounted CountExceeds 200M to 500M+ with full layersUnder 100M or partially depleted
Defender Mounted BuffsHigh flat refines with a strong wall generalLow flat attack refines (below +1,000)
Attacker Ranged BuffsRanged attack below 1,200%Ranged attack 1,800%+ with full debuff sub cities
Mayor Debuffs9-city debuff setup (e.g., Andrew Jackson, Empress Cixi)Enemy subordinate cities unlinked or dead

Your march requires sufficient ranged attack buffs to overcome the defender's in-city debuffs. At the same time, your subordinate city mayors must apply enough mounted attack and HP debuffs to force the T1 cavalry down toward their base stats.

March Composition and Layering Structure

A dedicated chipping march concentrates most of its capacity into top-tier archers while maintaining minimal buffer layers across other unit types to absorb incoming hits.

  • Main Striking Force (80–85% of march capacity): Split between your highest unlocked ranged tiers (T14, T13, and T12). These units deliver the primary damage against the cavalry wall.
  • Support Ranged Layers (5–10% of march capacity): Add 1,000 to 5,000 archers for every lower tier (T1 through T11) to cycle targeting rounds and sustain damage output.
  • Buffer Meat Layers (under 5% total): Add 100 to 500 units of every tier for ground, mounted, and siege. This prevents defending siege and high-tier troops from targeting your top archers in the opening exchange.

Managing Point Trades and Transitioning to Rallies

In SvS and Battlefield modes like the Battle of Gaugamela, score exchanges dictate whether you should continue solo chipping:

  1. Check the first battle report: T1 units yield minimal points when killed, while lost T13 and T14 units award high points to the defender. If your high-tier ranged casualties result in a negative net point exchange, stop solo attacks immediately.
  2. Transition to alliance rallies: If the target holds hundreds of millions of cavalry, solo hits become inefficient. Launching a ranged alliance rally pools multiple players' archers to overcome the flat-refine threshold in concentrated strikes.
  3. Switch troop types to finish the keep: Once the mounted wall falls below approximately 20% of its initial volume, the trap collapses. Switch from ranged attacks to ground marches to eliminate surviving archers, or mounted marches to clear remaining ground and siege units.
