To breed a legendary baby in Fallout Shelter, raise the combined base S.P.E.C.I.A.L. stats of both parents to at least 134—ideally capping both at 70 (10 in all attributes)—and assign a +Child S.P.E.C.I.A.L. pet to the mother right before tapping the baby delivery icon.
With two fully maxed parents, each birth has roughly an 80% chance for a common child, a 13.3% chance for a rare child, and a 6.6% chance for a legendary child. Pairing maxed parents with a +3 Child S.P.E.C.I.A.L. pet produces a newborn with up to 61 total starting attribute points.
Parent Stat Requirements and Odds
A newborn’s rarity tier depends entirely on the combined, permanent S.P.E.C.I.A.L. scores of both biological parents. Stat bonuses from equipped outfits do not count toward breeding odds.
- Combined Parent S.P.E.C.I.A.L. Under 134: Offspring will almost always roll as common dwellers.
- Combined Parent S.P.E.C.I.A.L. at 134 to 140: Offspring roll with the maximum possible odds of roughly 6.6% for legendary and 13.3% for rare.
To guarantee peak odds, train both prospective parents to 10 in every attribute using vault training rooms:
- Weight Room: Strength
- Armory: Perception
- Fitness Room: Endurance
- Lounge: Charisma (high Charisma speeds up the pairing animation in Living Quarters)
- Classroom: Intelligence
- Athletics Room: Agility
- Game Room: Luck
Baby Stat Tiers and Pet Bonuses
Offspring inherit fixed base stat totals according to their rolled tier. Equipping a pet with the "+Child S.P.E.C.I.A.L." bonus applies its stated bonus to all seven attributes simultaneously, adding +7, +14, or +21 points to the child's total base stats.
| Rarity Tier | Base Stats (No Pet) | +1 Child S.P.E.C.I.A.L. | +2 Child S.P.E.C.I.A.L. | +3 Child S.P.E.C.I.A.L. |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Common | 12 points | 19 points | 26 points | 33 points |
| Rare | 28 points | 35 points | 42 points | 49 points |
| Legendary | 40 points | 47 points | 54 points | 61 points |
A legendary baby born with a +3 pet requires only 9 additional training levels to reach a completely maxed 70-point stat profile once they grow up.
How to Time Delivery and Pet Swaps
Pregnancy lasts three real-world hours, followed by three real-world hours as a child before maturing into an adult dweller. The game determines the baby's rarity tier and stat distribution at the exact moment of birth, not during conception.
To maximize your pet efficiency:
- Pair your maxed parents in the Living Quarters until the female dweller becomes pregnant.
- Let the mother work in production rooms without a pet while the three-hour gestation timer elapses.
- Keep your +Child S.P.E.C.I.A.L. pet assigned to active vault workers or wasteland explorers during this waiting window.
- When the baby icon appears over the pregnant dweller's head, equip the +Child S.P.E.C.I.A.L. pet directly to her.
- Tap the baby icon to deliver the newborn with the boosted stats applied.
- Unequip the pet immediately and transfer it to another pregnant dweller ready to give birth.
Note: A "Twins Chance" pet must also be equipped at delivery to trigger multiple births, but it cannot be stacked with a Child S.P.E.C.I.A.L. pet. For building high-performance dwellers, guaranteed stat increases offer significantly greater training time savings than unboosted twins.
Maximizing Health on Legendary Offspring
Dwellers gain maximum hit points based on their current Endurance score each time they level up from 1 to 50. Because legendary babies start at Level 1 with high natural Endurance, you can finish their remaining Endurance training quickly in the Fitness Room. Once Endurance reaches 10, equip them with Heavy Wasteland Gear (+7 Endurance) and send them into the wasteland to level to 50, ensuring they reach the highest possible maximum health pool in the game.
