To survive Deathclaw attacks in Fallout Shelter, halt your vault's population before crossing the spawn threshold—at 59 dwellers in normal mode or 34 in survival mode—until your gear and dwellers are prepared. Once you choose to expand beyond those numbers, build a three-wide production room directly adjacent to your vault door and staff it with six high-health dwellers carrying your most powerful weapons.

Control Population Thresholds Before Expanding

Random Deathclaw raids do not occur until your vault reaches specific population milestones:

  • Normal Mode: Deathclaws begin attacking once you reach 60 dwellers.
  • Survival Mode: Deathclaws begin attacking once you reach 35 dwellers.

Rushing to 60 dwellers to unlock late-game facilities like the Nuclear Reactor frequently causes vault wipes because early dwellers lack the health and weaponry required to endure sustained attacks. Holding your population at 59 (or 34 in survival) allows you to construct training facilities, max out dweller stats, stockpile Stimpaks, and equip defenders with endgame weapons before facing your first raid.

Construct a Top-Floor Kill Gauntlet

Deathclaws follow a predictable pathing pattern. After breaking through the vault door, they fight the occupants of the first room, move across to the next connected room on the same floor, and take the first available elevator down to repeat the sequence on lower levels.

You can force Deathclaws into fighting your primary defense team twice by manipulating room and elevator layout:

[Vault Door] ──> [3-Wide Production Room] ──> [Elevator / Dead End]
                         ▲ │
                         └── (Deathclaws Backtrack Here) ─┘
  1. Place a three-wide production room next to the Vault Door: Merge three Power Generator or Nuclear Reactor rooms directly beside the entrance. This room holds six defending dwellers.
  2. Move the elevator to the far right: Do not place an elevator directly beside the vault door. Placing it at the far end of the top floor forces invaders to traverse your kill room first.
  3. Create a dead end: If the elevator does not connect downward or if there are no further rooms, surviving Deathclaws must turn around and run back through your three-wide room, taking continuous damage a second time before finding an exit.
  4. Leave the Vault Door unstaffed: Upgrading the door and assigning guards merely delays the attack and splits your healing attention. Leaving the entrance clear funnels invaders straight into your primary kill room.

Maximize Dweller Health and Room Damage

Vault-incident combat calculations depend strictly on dweller hit points and weapon attack ratings. Dwellers do not deal more incident damage based on their combat SPECIAL attributes.

Stat PriorityGame MechanicPractical Action
Dweller Health (HP)Maximum HP scales with Endurance gained at each level-up.Level defenders from 1 to 50 with 10 Endurance plus Endurance gear like Heavy Wasteland Gear.
Weapon DamageHigh base damage shortens encounter duration, reducing incoming damage.Equip front-line defenders with weapons rated at 15+ damage (such as Plasma Rifles or Flamers).
Stimpak DeliveryDeathclaws deal rapid damage across multiple dwellers at once.Zoom in during the raid and tap dwellers to administer Stimpaks whenever health drops below half.

Minimize Attack Frequency

Once you pass the population trigger, you can reduce the frequency of Deathclaw raids by adjusting your daily vault routines:

  • Switch the Radio Studio to internal broadcasts: Broadcasting outward to recruit wasteland survivors significantly increases the chance of triggering a Deathclaw raid. Change the studio's setting to vault-only to boost happiness without rolling extra raid chances.
  • Batch wasteland traffic: Opening the vault door to send out scavengers or collect returning explorers rolls a check for incident spawns. Wait until multiple dwellers are ready to exit or enter, then cycle them through the door all at once.
