To beat Levels 1 through 10 in Gardenscapes, prioritize creating explosive power-ups over basic three-piece matches. Creating explosives clears clustered objectives faster, charges your Rainbow Blast meter, and digs through grass layers while preserving moves.

Forming Explosives on Levels 1 to 4

Levels 1 through 4 require collecting set amounts of target pieces, such as apples, leaves, acorns, or water droplets. Instead of making isolated three-in-a-row matches for individual targets, scan the lower and central areas of the board to set up four-piece and five-piece combinations.

  • Firecracker: Match four identical pieces in a straight row or column. Detonating a Firecracker clears tiles one square away in each cardinal direction.
  • Bomb: Match five identical pieces in a T-shape or L-shape intersection. Detonating a Bomb clears all tiles within a two-square radius.

Making matches near the bottom of the board causes falling cascades that frequently generate these combinations automatically.

Charging and Using the Rainbow Blast

Beginning in Level 5, detonating explosives charges the circular Rainbow Blast meter located on the left side of the screen.

ExplosiveCreation RequirementDetonation Area
Firecracker4 in a line1 tile cross
Bomb5 in a T- or L-shape2 tiles radius
Dynamite / TNT6 in a line or cluster3 tiles radius

Once the meter fills, a Rainbow Blast piece drops onto the board. Swapping the Rainbow Blast with an adjacent piece removes all matching copies of that piece across the entire board.

Use the Rainbow Blast in two specific ways:

  • Fulfill trailing goals: Swap it with the specific objective piece you still need to finish the level immediately.
  • Reset a crowded board: Swap it with the most common non-objective tile to clear clutter, trigger cascades, and open new match opportunities.

Uncovering Hidden Gnomes in Levels 8 to 10

Levels 8 through 10 introduce garden gnomes hidden beneath grass tiles. You must clear the turf directly with adjacent matches or power-up blasts to free each gnome.

  • Single-layer grass: Light green turf that clears after one adjacent match or explosion.
  • Double-layer grass: Dark green turf that requires two hits to remove completely.

Gnomes occupy fixed footprints of 1x2 or 2x2 squares. You do not need to clear all grass on the board to complete the stage. Watch the turf as layers thin; exposed stone edges reveal the outline of the statue underneath. Once you spot an outline, focus matches solely on the remaining covered tiles of that statue.

Swapping Combined Explosives

Swapping two adjacent power-ups together triggers an enhanced blast effect:

  • Firecracker + Firecracker: Creates an extended cross explosion that travels two squares vertically and horizontally.
  • Bomb + Firecracker: Triggers a combined three-tile radius explosion that removes double-layer grass instantly.
  • Rainbow Blast + Explosive: Transforms the most abundant piece on the grid into copies of that explosive, causing simultaneous detonations across the board.

In Levels 9 and 10, board layouts narrow into bottlenecks. Detonating combinations in the lower half pulls pieces down through these tight passages, breaking grass automatically without wasting turns matching inside narrow lanes.

Maximizing Leftover Moves

Every unused move at the end of a stage turns into an explosive that detonates during the final sequence, awarding bonus coins. Accumulating these coins early gives you resources to purchase extra moves or boosters on later stages.

Each completed stage awards exactly one Star. Use these Stars between levels to progress Austin's initial garden tasks, including sweeping leaves, fixing the bench, and planting flowers.
