To build a winning endgame Undead board in Hearthstone Battlegrounds, pivot away from flat attack-only auras and transition into permanent health and death-trigger engines like Archlich Kel'Thuzad, Sister Deathwhisper, and Champion of the Primus.
Attack buffs such as Nerubian Deathswarmer and Anub'arak trade well during Tavern Tiers 3 and 4, but attack-heavy boards collapse against enemy cleave and divine shields without sufficient health. Once your Undead attack aura reaches roughly +15, stop spending gold on minor flat attack bonuses and prioritize high-tier health scaling.
Archlich Kel'Thuzad Recruit-Phase Duplication
Archlich Kel'Thuzad destroys an adjacent minion at the end of your recruit turn and summons a fresh copy of it. This interaction permanently triggers Deathrattle and Reborn effects during the recruit phase rather than temporarily in combat.
Place Archlich Kel'Thuzad directly to the left of the minion you want to target:
| Target Minion | Triggered Mechanic | Board Benefit |
|---|---|---|
| Eternal Knight | Deathrattle activates in tavern | Permanently scales base stats for all present and future Eternal Knights. |
| Champion of the Primus | Undead death condition met | Distributes permanent Attack and Health across your current and future warband. |
| Minion with Reborn | Reborn mechanic triggers | Leaves the summoned duplicate while retaining the Reborn copy if board space permits. |
| Token / Economy Undead | Deathrattle spawn effect | Generates extra recruit-phase resources or tokens before the next combat starts. |
Always manage your board space when running Archlich Kel'Thuzad. If your warband occupies all seven slots and the target minion possesses Reborn, the board may lack the space required to resolve both the fresh duplicate and the Reborn token. Keep an open slot if you rely on Reborn duplication during recruit phases.
Warband Health Engines: Sister Deathwhisper and Champion of the Primus
Raw attack without board survivability creates glass-cannon boards that lose to splash damage. Sister Deathwhisper and Champion of the Primus provide the defensive scaling necessary to outlast opposing endgame builds.
- Sister Deathwhisper: Grants permanent board stats during combat whenever a friendly minion triggers Reborn. Maximize her value by applying Reborn tags to multi-body summons, such as Handless Forsaken, using units like Soulsplitter or Mummifier. A single Reborn Handless Forsaken creates multiple bodies and arms, fueling several Deathwhisper triggers in one round.
- Champion of the Primus: Buffs your Undead warband as friendly Undead die. This works synergistically with Kel'Thuzad recruit-phase destructions as well as wide combat token swarms.
- Titus Rivendare Considerations: Titus Rivendare doubles Deathrattle triggers, but he does not double Reborn triggers. If your board focuses primarily on Reborn triggers to fuel Sister Deathwhisper, bench Titus in favor of an additional Reborn Undead to avoid wasting a slot on a non-synergistic unit.
Optimal Board Positioning and Combat Order
Protect your scaling engines by placing them far away from the initial attack order. Your frontline must die first to open board space for token summons and activate combat-start scaling immediately.
- Slot 1 (Sacrificial Striker): Place an expendable Reborn or Deathrattle minion here. It attacks first, dies immediately, and generates open space while triggering early Avenge thresholds.
- Slot 2 (Secondary Breaker): Place a utility attacker or shield-breaker to absorb enemy Taunt minions and clear attack lanes.
- Slots 3–5 (Scaled Beaters): Position high-stat beaters, such as scaled Eternal Knights or high-stat summons, that do not generate wide token swarms.
- Slots 6–7 (Protected Engines): Position Sister Deathwhisper and Archlich Kel'Thuzad on the far right. These units must survive as long as possible to harvest stats from dying frontline tokens.
Apply Taunt strictly to minions you want attacked first, such as a Reborn Handless Forsaken. Never give Taunt to Sister Deathwhisper or Archlich Kel'Thuzad.
Countering Cleave and Tech Cards
Opponents in late-game lobbies often buy tech minions to neutralize Undead boards:
- Sin'dorei Straight Shot: This tech card removes Reborn and Taunt from the minion it attacks and adjacent neighbors. Avoid placing crucial Reborn minions directly next to your primary Taunt minion. Position an un-buffed filler minion between your Taunt and your key Reborn units to absorb the adjacent silence effect.
- Cleave Attackers: Wide cleave hits from Mechs or Beasts can reach right-side anchors if your Taunts are poorly placed. Place a high-health Taunt on the far right edge next to a low-priority minion to direct cleave swings safely away from your primary scaling engines.
