Equip Blade of the Black Empire as early as possible to turn your cheap Shadow spells into direct face damage. In this Control Priest archetype, casting a Shadow spell causes your opponent to take fatigue damage that scales upward with every cast. Stabilize against early aggression with reactive clears, chain cheap Shadow spells once the weapon is active, and assemble C’Thun to close out matches against opponents who can out-heal early fatigue.

How Blade of the Black Empire Fatigue Works

Blade of the Black Empire provides a continuous passive effect while equipped: whenever you cast a Shadow spell, your opponent takes fatigue damage.

Key interactions define this mechanic:

  • Deck size is ignored: The opponent takes fatigue immediately even if their deck is full. Their actual card count remains untouched.
  • Damage scales continuously: The first Shadow spell deals 1 fatigue damage, the second deals 2, the third deals 3, and so on. The counter does not reset between turns.
  • Bypasses board defenses: Fatigue damage strikes the enemy hero directly, completely ignoring enemy Taunts and Divine Shields.

Because the scaling is cumulative, four Shadow spells cast across multiple turns deal a combined 10 damage purely through fatigue. Holding low-cost Shadow spells until the weapon is active turns 1-mana and 2-mana cards into high-value late-game burn.

Mulligan Strategy

Your primary goal is finding Blade of the Black Empire to begin advancing the fatigue counter as quickly as possible. Adjust your opening hand based on your matchup and initial draw:

Sequencing Turns and Managing Durability

The weapon’s primary value comes from its passive effect, not its physical attack. Indiscriminately swinging into minions wastes weapon durability and destroys your primary damage engine prematurely.

Follow these execution rules during matches:

  1. Preserve weapon charges: Do not swing with Blade of the Black Empire unless doing so removes a lethal board threat or provides the exact physical damage needed to win that turn.
  2. Hold cheap Shadow spells early: Avoid casting low-cost Shadow removal before the weapon is in play unless you face imminent lethal damage. Casting them without the weapon wastes free fatigue increments.
  3. Plan around weapon removal: If an opponent runs weapon destruction, avoid equipping the weapon on an empty turn. Save enough mana to cast at least one or two cheap Shadow spells on the turn you equip it to guarantee immediate fatigue value.
  4. Prioritize survival over burn: While fatigue damage applies steady pressure, never greed for fatigue ticks if skipping defensive plays leaves you dead on the following turn. Use larger board wipes and non-Shadow spells when possible to control the board, weaving small Shadow spells into turns alongside Hero Power healing.

Closing Matches with C’Thun

While aggressive and midrange decks usually succumb to scaling fatigue damage alone, heavy armor and healing decks can occasionally absorb early fatigue ticks. C’Thun serves as your alternate finisher to bypass this defense.

Play C’Thun pieces throughout the mid-game to control enemy boards and assemble the final card. By the time C’Thun is fully assembled, ongoing fatigue ticks will have already depleted the opponent's health pool. Dropping the completed C’Thun delivers 30 split damage, converting what would normally be a partial board clear into an immediate lethal strike against softened targets.
