To beat Episode 1, Greenlands Level 5 in Hexapolis - Civilization game, you must claim neutral villages immediately, develop your economy through targeted tile harvesting, and use combined-arms tactics to take enemy capitals.
Early Scouting and Village Expansion
Your opening turns determine map control. Leaving unclaimed villages on the map allows rival AI factions to seize them, expanding their gold income and troop production capacity.
- Scout through the fog of war: Move starting warriors outward in diverging directions toward high-visibility tiles to reveal unclaimed villages quickly.
- Occupy neutral villages: Moving a unit onto an unclaimed village tile begins the capture process, which completes on the following turn. Once captured, the settlement becomes a functioning city that immediately boosts your turn-by-turn gold income.
- Leave a home defender: Keep a unit near your starting capital or recruit a defender early. Rival scouts roam aggressively in Level 5 and will capture undefended settlements if your entire army marches away.
Resource Harvesting and Technology Order
Upgrading settlements increases your per-turn gold income and improves the garrison defense bonus of stationed units. However, research costs increase as your empire expands, so avoid researching technologies you cannot immediately use.
| Priority Branch | Unlocks & Benefits | When to Research |
|---|---|---|
| Resource Gathering (Hunting, Farming, Mining) | Enables harvesting adjacent tiles to fill city population bars and level up settlements | Early turns; research only the specific resource types visible within your borders |
| Forestry | Clears tree tiles to remove movement bottlenecks and supply local city growth | Early-to-mid turns, once wood tiles obstruct paths or are needed for population |
| Archery | Unlocks ranged units that attack without triggering enemy retaliation | Mid turns, as soon as your units make contact with hostile tribal borders |
| Advanced Military (Mounted & Heavy Melee) | Grants durable, high-damage units capable of surviving sieges | Late turns, after your upgraded cities generate steady surplus gold |
When deciding between spending gold on additional basic units or harvesting adjacent resource tiles, prioritize tile harvesting if your borders are secure. Upgraded cities provide compounding gold returns that fund advanced military technologies much faster than unupgraded settlements can.
Combat Tactics and City Sieges
Defeating rival tribes requires capturing their capital cities. Defending units deal counterattack damage when struck by melee attacks, especially when fortified on city tiles with garrison bonuses.
- Soften garrisons with ranged attacks: Position archers one hex away from the target city. Fire on the garrison first, as ranged attacks deal chip damage without triggering melee retaliation.
- Deliver the final blow with melee units: Use a melee warrior or mounted unit to finish off the weakened defender and step directly onto the city hex.
- Occupy with high-health units: Stepping onto an enemy city initiates a siege, stopping opponent production, but the city is not captured until your next turn begins. The AI will counterattack the occupier during its turn. Always claim the tile with your healthiest melee unit so it can survive the enemy's assault.
- Withdraw to heal: If an attacking unit takes heavy damage in an open skirmish, pull it back from the front line to use its turn action for healing rather than throwing it away in an unfavorable trade.
