To beat Swamp Level 2 in Hexapolis - Civilization game, build your early gold income and city borders before marching across the map's restrictive marshland. Hold dry choke points with fortified Warriors and use Archers to attack across water and mud hexes so your melee units do not get stranded in low-defense terrain.
Early Economy and Turn Progression
Swamp terrain slows unit movement, which makes an underfunded early military rush easy to stall and expensive to reinforce. Spend your opening turns building a stable economy and expanding your borders toward the central land bridges. Expanding toward the center reveals enemy patrol routes early and gives damaged units friendly territory where they can retreat and recover hit points between fights.
| Turn Phase | Primary Focus | Gold Allocation | Key Actions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Turns 1–5 | Scouting and foundation | Territory expansion | Claim dry resource tiles, harvest nearby food or timber nodes, recruit your first Warrior, and scout immediate fog. |
| Turns 6–12 | Tech and infrastructure | Production buildings | Raise city level for per-turn income, unlock ranged tech, build resource extractors, and secure the first choke point. |
| Turns 13–20 | Army assembly and skirmishing | Military recruitment | Field an Archer core, bait neutral camps, and establish a forward defensive line. |
| Turns 21+ | Final advance and siege | Siege and reinforcements | Push through the swamp corridor, bombard the enemy capital, and clear remaining defenders. |
Navigating Marsh Terrain and Land Bridges
Swamp Level 2 breaks up the map with water channels, dense reeds, and marsh hexes that impose movement cost penalties. Low-elevation mud tiles also strip away defensive bonuses, while enemy units patrol the narrow land bridges connecting isolated island hexes.
Do not end a turn with advancing units stranded in open water, mud, or unrevealed fog of war. Before moving your main force across a crossing, send a durable melee scout ahead to establish vision while keeping your follow-up units on solid ground.
Unit Roles and Formation
Fighting exclusively with close-range swordsmen or other melee infantry is unreliable here because marsh movement costs let enemies counterattack before your units can close the gap. Pair frontline Warriors with at least two Archer squads to control the crossings safely.
- Frontline Warriors: Use Warriors for spatial control rather than primary damage. Station them on elevated or dry choke points directly in front of your ranged line, and use their fortify or defensive action instead of chasing retreating enemies into swamp tiles.
- Archer Core: Keep at least two Archer squads right behind your Warrior wall. Archers can fire across water and marsh hexes without taking terrain retaliation, allowing them to weaken dangerous targets before those units reach your line. Focus all ranged attacks on one enemy squad at a time to remove its damage from the board completely.
Clearing Neutral Camps and Capturing the Capital
Neutral camps and wild units guard resource-rich nodes around the swamp periphery. Rather than rushing these defenders head-on and draining your frontline's health, bait them across the marsh:
- Place a healthy Warrior on solid ground at the outer edge of the camp's threat range.
- Keep your Archers positioned one tile behind the Warrior.
- Let the enemy move across the marsh and attack your fortified Warrior.
- On your next turn, hit the exposed enemy with Archer volleys and finish it with a melee strike to claim the camp.
Use the same disciplined spacing when pushing the enemy capital. Narrow water gaps around the stronghold prevent a wide surround, and moving in a loose swarm leaves lead units bottlenecked under city fire. Advance across the final bridgehead in a compact formation, moving Warriors forward only as far as your Archers can cover them. Once your Archers are in bombardment range, eliminate all defending units inside the city limits before moving a melee unit onto the capital tile to capture it and win the match.

I wish I had read this before upgrading the wrong thing.
I tried this today and it worked better than my old setup.
This helped me understand early game much better.
