To succeed with the Sports archetype introduced in the How Many Dudes? 1.1 Beta, arrange your roster into a staggered formation that redirects physical projectiles between teammates while stacking bounce and physical damage upgrades. Unlike magic or tech units that rely on delayed area-of-effect spells or slow charging weapons, Sports Dudes rely on projectile momentum, ricochets, and active collision to control enemy swarms.

Core Sports Dudes and Unit Roles

The 1.1 Beta includes five Sports Dudes, each filling a distinct operational role across the field:

  • Hockey Dude (Frontline Enforcer): Sweeps swarms away using physical checks and launches ricocheting pucks along arena boundaries to create space.
  • Baseball Dude (Mid-Field Striker): Intercepts incoming loose balls or swarms with fast line drives that pierce grouped enemies.
  • Soccer Dude (Mid-Field Harasser): Fires rapid, low-flying volleys across the ground to soften approaching waves.
  • The Quarterback / Football Dude (Backline Playmaker): Throws high-arcing passes that stun heavy targets on impact and can be caught or redirected by allies.
  • Basketball Dude (Mid-to-Backline Flanker): Uses bank shots off arena margins and bounce passes to pick off flanking targets.

Optimal Positioning and Pass Routing

Sports Dudes depend on projectile flight paths and friendly collisions. Placing units in a tight corner causes ricochets to hit walls uselessly, while scattering them too far apart prevents teammates from catching and redirecting balls.

Arrange your team in a triangle or staggered diamond formation to maintain pass coverage:

Position ZoneSports DudesTactical Objective
Frontline AnchorHockey DudeAbsorb the initial charge, check elites, and hold enemies in firing lanes.
Mid-Field PivotBaseball Dude, Soccer DudeIntercept loose projectiles, hit piercing line drives, and clear side lanes.
Backline PocketFootball Dude, Basketball DudeLaunch passes over standard mobs and hit bank shots from safety.

To maximize kinetic output, place a Baseball Dude directly along the throwing trajectory of your Football Dude. When the Baseball Dude hits an incoming pass, the projectile redirects with increased velocity and collision damage into the oncoming horde.

Upgrade and Relic Priorities

When selecting upgrades for a Sports-focused run, prioritize modifiers that keep projectiles active:

  1. Additional Bounces: Extra bounces scale better than flat attack increases because each redirect extends the lifespan of passes and line drives across crowded boards.
  2. Projectile Speed and Knockback: Higher velocity increases collision damage, while knockback keeps enemies pinned away from your backline.
  3. Attack Speed and Cooldown Recovery: Faster attack loops allow your passers to re-engage before elite units close the distance.
  4. Flat Physical Multipliers and Critical Strike Chance: Sports attacks rely purely on physical trajectories, making elemental or magic damage relics poor investments for this archetype.

Handling Boss Encounters

Sports Dudes clear dense waves efficiently, but their damage drops against isolated bosses where few targets exist to bounce projectiles between.

To overcome this single-target limitation:

  • Supplement your build with armor-shredding items or physical debuffs.
  • Use the Hockey Dude to body-check and trap the boss against the arena boundary.
  • Funnel batted balls and pucks directly into the wall behind the boss, forcing rapid ricochets between the boundary and the boss's hit box to melt its health pool quickly.
