To win difficult combat engagements in Iron Marines+, you must manually retarget units onto backline threats and move squads out of telegraphed damage zones. By default, your units engage the nearest hostile, allowing enemy spawners, artillery, and elite disruptors to attack unchecked from behind frontlines.

Take immediate manual control as soon as a wave hits to neutralize threat multipliers, conserve hero health, and prevent squad wipes.

Target Priority in Skirmishes

Leaving squads on automated fire exposes your strike teams to heavy ranged damage and endless reinforcement waves. When an encounter begins, survey the hostile backline and manually direct your damage dealers against the highest-threat targets.

Target CategoryThreat ProfileTactical PriorityCorrect Counteraction
Summoners & NestsProduces reinforcements over timeHighFocus fire immediately with ranged burst squads

Disruptors & StunnersLocks squads down or silences skillsHighEliminate using hero burst skills before engagement
Armored MeleeSoaks frontline damage and body-blocksLow to MediumKite backward while clearing ranged support first

Targeting spawners cuts off reinforcement pressure, while removing artillery preserves squad health. Once high-threat backliners fall, your surviving units can easily defeat the remaining melee frontliners.

Dodging Telegraphed Attacks and Hazards

Standing in place during combat will quickly cost you veteran squads. Bosses, elite aliens, and traps display clear telegraph markers—such as red outlines, glowing floor decals, or winding wind-up animations—before unleashing heavy area attacks.

When a telegraph appears:

  1. Issue a move order toward open terrain immediately.
  2. If a slow unit cannot clear the blast radius in time, steer your highest-damage units away while letting your hero absorb the edge damage.
  3. Keep squads loosely spaced rather than clustered on a single point during marches to reduce damage from subterranean ambushes and toxic spore hazards.

Repositioning preserves personal shields and prevents having to spend resources to re-recruit fallen squads.

Hero Positioning and Ability Timing

Heroes possess larger health pools, natural regeneration, and high-impact skills, making them ideal frontline anchors. However, wasting abilities on minor fodder leaves your army vulnerable to sudden elite surges.

  • Anchor with your hero: Position your hero slightly ahead of standard troopers to absorb initial aggro, but pull them back when shields deplete.
  • Control bottlenecks: Trigger stuns, barriers, and bombardment skills inside narrow chokepoints where enemies bunch together.
  • Disrupt elite skills: Save crowd-control abilities to interrupt elite monsters when they begin charging heavy attacks.

Managing Support Assets and Consumables

Special weapons and orbital support assets—such as combat turrets, localized airstrikes, and recovery drones—function as emergency pressure relief.

  • Deploy on multi-front assaults: Place an automated turret at an exposed flank to hold off secondary attack paths while your main strike force finishes an objective.
  • Save consumables for crisis moments: Do not use expensive assets on minor wandering patrols that basic units can eliminate without health loss.
  • Hold assets for extraction phases: Keep defensive reserves intact for timed defense sequences and boss phases.

Tech Tree Upgrade Priorities

Your spending choices between campaign stages establish the baseline resilience of your army in the field.

  1. Universal Survivability First: Invest initial tech points into baseline health pools, shield recharge rates, and squad recruitment speed. General defensive upgrades benefit all unit types across early planetary missions.
  2. Hero Cooldowns and Economy Second: Once basic survivability is secured, purchase upgrades that lower hero cooldowns and increase resource flow. Lower cooldowns let your hero activate key crowd-control abilities multiple times per fight.
