To expand successfully in Iron Marines+, capture secondary ether nodes early to boost your resource income, anchor construction zones with your hero, and deploy role-specific turrets on choke points to repel enemy waves without tying up unit supply.
Securing Early Ether Nodes
Ether is the core currency required to build static defenses, deploy advanced units, and reinforce fallen squad members. Delaying expansion restricts you to basic infantry and leaves you underfunded against scaling enemy waves.
- Scout immediate perimeter paths: Clear the fog around your starting command hub using your initial squad and hero.
- Occupy the capture circle: Move units into the node's capture ring to begin claiming it while keeping forces ready for ambush spawns.
- Confirm incoming paths before moving on: A newly captured node immediately increases your passive ether generation, but leaving it unattended allows wandering hostiles to neutralize it and cut off your income.
Choosing and Placing Base Turrets
Automated defenses build directly on designated construction pads. Because turrets do not consume unit population, they allow you to dedicate your full squad cap to roaming assault forces.
| Turret Type | Tactical Role | Placement Priority | Weakness |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rapid-Fire Gatling | Cleans up light swarms and fast melee runners | Tight corridor entrances and blind corners | Ineffective against heavy armor and shields |
| Heavy Cannon / Missile | Breaks through heavily armored enemies and siege walkers | Backline pads protected by terrain or units | Slow firing rate; easily overrun by swarms |
| Energy / Laser Emitter | Strips shields and deals sustained focus damage | Intersections where multiple lanes converge | High ether cost; requires unobstructed line of sight |
Overlap turret firing arcs at key terrain choke points whenever multiple pads are available. If an outpost contains only a single pad, build a rapid-fire turret to handle early swarms, then reconfigure or dismantle it for heavy ordnance once armored units appear in later waves.
Defending Outposts During Construction
Nodes and turrets are most vulnerable while under construction or during upgrade timers.
- Draw aggression with your hero: Position your hero slightly ahead of the construction pad to intercept incoming waves. Heroes do not cost ether to maintain and revive automatically after a timed cooldown, making them ideal damage sponges while structures assemble.
- Disrupt approaching clusters: Use your hero's crowd-control abilities—such as stuns, knockbacks, or area burns—to stall enemy groups before they reach unfinished foundations.
- Reposition to a central reserve: Once local turrets are active, withdraw your hero toward a central crossroads to respond quickly to threats on other lanes.
Using Commander Tactical Strikes
Off-map tactical abilities spend global commander energy instead of ether, making them emergency tools for defending split fronts.
- Target siege units: Hostile artillery often outranges static turrets. Drop explosive orbital strikes or freezing abilities directly onto clustered siege units before they can dismantle your defenses from safe distances.
- Drop field support: If a forward turret takes critical structural damage during a heavy assault, deploy emergency shields or instant repair drops to keep the structure standing until mobile squads arrive.
Reallocating Turret Investments
Static defenses protect income lanes, but they cannot advance objectives, destroy hostile production structures, or collect scenario items.
Avoid building defenses on nodes located safely behind your frontline. As your army pushes deeper into the map, dismantle rear turrets to recover a portion of their ether cost, then reinvest those resources into high-tier combat units or forward fortifications near the final objective.

The tips are practical and easy to follow.
I wish I had read this before upgrading the wrong thing.
Good guide for Iron Marines+ players. The early game part was useful.
