The campaign includes 21 missions, while another 21 Special Operations provide additional challenges for players who want to test their ability to manage battles under changing conditions. The setting moves through unknown planets, crushed starships, dangerous territory, and encounters with massive bosses, giving the game a focused military-adventure structure without requiring an online connection.

The central gameplay loop is built around planning, attacking, and adjusting your army during the fight. Your units can change roles even in the thick of battle, allowing a ranger to become a sniper or a flamethrower-equipped unit to switch to missile launchers. More than 40 upgrades include options such as Defense Drones, Napalm Rockets, Ricocheting Blasts, and Lethal Weapons, letting you work toward the kind of army that matches your preferred approach. You can also bring seven additional units into battle to give a hero extra firepower, while eight special weapons expand the tactical options available during missions. These systems support experimentation: one battle may reward careful defensive preparation with mines and turrets, while another may call for aggressive assaults supported by heavy weapons and hero abilities. Unique bosses provide larger encounters with distinct, imposing targets, and the three difficulty settings—Casual, Normal, and Veteran—let you choose how severely the game punishes mistakes. Impossible Mode is available for players who want the most demanding version of the campaign’s tactical challenges, and more than 70 achievements give completionists additional objectives beyond simply finishing missions.

On PC, a larger display makes it easier to read the battlefield while several groups are moving, identify where enemies are approaching, and keep track of heroes, support units, turrets, and special weapons at the same time.
