Station your ranged squads and heroes on elevated ridges and cliffs to increase their firing distance and shield them from grounded melee attacks. In Iron Marines+, taking the high ground expands unit vision, clears fog of war sooner, and forces purely melee enemies to route through choke points like ramps, stairs, or lifts before they can strike.

How High Ground Combat Mechanics Work

Occupying elevated terrain provides distinct combat advantages:

  • Extended Firing Range: Ranged squads placed on high ground acquire targets farther away than when firing from flat ground. This allows your units to eliminate threats before enemies enter their own attack range.
  • Early Vision Acquisition: Elevated positioning reveals approaching patrols and ambushes earlier by reducing vision obstructions.
  • Melee Pathing Immunity: Enemies without ranged attacks cannot hit units stationed on cliff ledges from below. They must walk the entire distance to an access ramp, remaining exposed to continuous fire while climbing.

Unit Roles on Elevated Terrain

Different unit types perform distinct tactical functions when interacting with vertical terrain. Long-range squads gain the greatest benefit from high perches, while pure melee units are best reserved for holding entryways.

Unit ArchetypeElevation BenefitTactical Deployment
Snipers and Beam UnitsMaximumStation on high ledges for safe, long-range single-target pickoffs.
Rocket and ArtilleryHighPlace near cliffs to bombard approaching groups and choke points.
Ranged HeroesHighOversee lanes to provide support fire and targeted ability usage.
Melee BrawlersSituationalPosition at the top threshold of access ramps to block climbing enemies.

Placing melee units directly along the edge of a cliff without ramp access wastes their damage, as they cannot reach enemies passing directly beneath them.

Ramp Defense and Funneling Tactics

Ramps and slopes provide natural choke points to stop incoming waves:

  1. Hold the Crest: Do not fight at the base of a ramp where your units can be flanked or surrounded. Pull your frontline back to the top opening.
  2. Block the Choke Point: Station a durable hero or defensive squad right at the top threshold to force climbing enemies into a narrow column.
  3. Layer Overlapping Fire: Place fragile snipers and heavy ranged attackers further back along the plateau. While your frontline holds the choke point, your elevated ranged units deal uninterrupted damage to the funneling column.

Attacking Entrenched Enemy Heights

Approaching an enemy position situated on high ground requires careful pacing to avoid heavy casualties from low-ground vision penalties:

  • Lead with High-Health Units: March durable units ahead to draw perched fire away from fragile damage dealers.
  • Use Perimeter Blind Spots: Path along outer cliff walls where terrain outcroppings block the elevated defenders' line of sight until you reach the ramp base.
  • Clear Perches with Skills: Drop hero abilities, targeted combat strikes, or orbital powers directly onto the perched formation to remove them without marching up the ramp.
  • Outrange the Perch: Position your longest-range snipers along the perimeter to duel defenders from outside their secondary support fire.

Threats That Bypass Elevation

High ground does not offer total defense:

  • Aerial Attackers: Flying units ignore terrain elevation entirely and can target isolated high-ground squads without pathing up ramps.
  • Indirect and Ranged Fire: Mortars, artillery, and long-range enemies can still target squads on ledges if they are within firing range.
  • Dead-End Ledges: Avoid positioning backline squads on dead-end cliffs without an exit path. If an armored wave breaks through the ramp defense, cornered ranged units cannot retreat or kite incoming threats.
