To beat Mission 7: Cocoon on Veteran difficulty in Iron Marines+, you must secure a secondary Ether extractor immediately, hold your base perimeter with turrets, and use long-range Snipers protected by a frontline hero to eliminate alien pods one by one. Rushing into the hive triggers multiple breakout waves at once, which quickly overwhelms your squad under Veteran damage scaling.
Secure Early Ether and Choke Points
Veterans difficulty increases enemy health and spawn rates, making an unupgraded economy fatal. Do not push outward into the alien basin until your local resource supply and entrance defense are established.
- Clear the nearest node: Advance your starting squad and hero toward the closest secondary Ether node. Use your hero's defensive abilities to absorb initial attacks so basic infantry survive without costing replacement Ether.
- Build an extractor immediately: Construct an extractor on the cleared node right away to start funding defensive turrets and squad upgrades.
- Anchor the entry ramp: Station your infantry at the choke point connecting the node back to your command center. Build a basic perimeter turret to intercept wandering Fell patrols before targeting any dormant pods.
Recommended Squad Composition
Attacking pods with short-range squads triggers melee swarms and acid bursts directly on your firing line. A disciplined front-to-back formation minimizes casualties:
- Primary Damage (Snipers): Snipers provide the range needed to attack cocoons and high-priority targets outside the aggro range of surrounding defenders. Keep them stationed behind your frontline at all times.
- Frontline Anchor (Hero or Brawlers): Position a durable hero such as Taggins or a squad of Brawlers ahead of your ranged units. Their role is to absorb leap attacks, body-block swarms, and hold choke points while Snipers fire.
- Swarm Control Swap (Pyros): If small melee swarms push past your hero, hot-swap an auxiliary unit slot into Pyros to clear clustered targets before they reach your Snipers.
Methodical Cocoon Destruction
Damaging a cocoon speeds up its incubation. When its health falls below half, it ruptures and releases a wave of Fell reinforcements. Attacking several pods simultaneously will trigger multiple waves at once and collapse your line.
Follow this sequence for each nest:
- Clear roaming patrols: Kill any active ground patrols and flying spitters around the cocoon before damaging the structure itself.
- Set your formation: Position Snipers at maximum attack range. Place your hero midway between the Snipers and the pod.
- Focus fire on a single target: Direct all units to fire on one cocoon rather than splitting damage across neighboring pods.
- Counter the mid-health rupture: As the cocoon hits 50% health and ruptures, immediately activate your hero's defensive or area-of-effect abilities to contain the new spawns.
- Regroup: After destroying the pod, pull back to let your hero regenerate health before engaging the next cluster.
Turret Placement and Base Defense
Level 7 uses divergent pathways where enemy packs regularly bypass your army to strike unprotected extractors. Turrets placed at critical junctions prevent your production from collapsing while your main force is busy.
| Turret Type | Ideal Placement | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Gatling / Rapid-Fire | Narrow ground choke points | Clears fast-moving light swarms before they reach extractors |
| Missile Installation | Elevated cliff edges | Intercepts flying alien units taking shortcuts across terrain |
Leave at least one turret guarding every active extractor. Combined with the defensive fire of your main base, static turrets eliminate minor patrol waves without forcing you to recall your strike team.
Late-Phase Hive Push
The final northern sector contains dense clusters of large cocoons supported by armored bio-forms. Keep your hero strictly positioned in narrow passages ahead of your Snipers so ranged units are never flanked or backed into corners.
If your frontline hero falls, retreat your infantry immediately toward your nearest turret line rather than fighting in the open. Once the hero revives, resume your forward push, direct your Snipers onto the primary cocoons, and destroy the core hive structure to complete the mission.

The explanation is clear, especially for beginners.
Good guide for Iron Marines+ players. The heroes part was useful.
I wish I had read this before upgrading the wrong thing.
