To speed up progression and resource gathering in No Man's Sky, adopt several undocumented mechanics immediately: shrink your Terrain Manipulator beam to multiply mineral yields, use the melee-boost jump for faster planet traversal, buy two Exosuit slots in each visited star system, arrange upgrade modules in 2x2 grids for stat bonuses, and use Photo Mode or dug-out caves to survive extreme weather.
Shrink the Terrain Manipulator Beam to Maximize Resource Yield
Mineral deposits such as Copper, Cadmium, Emeril, and Activated Indium yield resources per extraction pulse rather than the volume of earth removed. Using a wide beam destroys a node in a few pulses and yields very few total materials.
Reduce your Terrain Manipulator beam to its smallest setting to force your multi-tool into dozens of micro-pulses across the same vein. You can adjust the beam size using the bracket keys ([ and ]) on PC or the bumper buttons/D-pad on console controllers.
| Beam Setting | Mining Speed | Terrain Cleared Per Hit | Total Resource Yield | Best Use Case |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Smallest Sphere | Slow | Minimal | Maximum (3x–4x) | Rare minerals (Cadmium, Emeril, Activated metals) |
| Default Medium | Moderate | Balanced | Standard baseline | Everyday terraforming and basic resource gathering |
| Largest Sphere | Instantaneous | Huge volume | Minimal | Digging out buried ruins or leveling ground |
This method requires more silicate powder or ferrite fuel to sustain the tool, but a single deposit can produce triple or quadruple the normal mineral yield.
Execute the Melee-Boost for Fast On-Foot Travel
Sprinting drains life support quickly, while the basic jetpack provides little horizontal velocity. You can convert melee momentum into forward air speed by chaining a sprint, melee attack, and jetpack burst together.
- Sprint forward across flat or downhill terrain.
- Press your melee attack button (
Qon PC,R1on PlayStation, orRBon Xbox) to trigger a lunging strike. - Tap and hold your jetpack key immediately after pressing melee, before the lunge animation finishes.
The jetpack preserves the forward lunge velocity, launching you horizontally at speeds comparable to surface exocraft. Feather your thruster in short taps rather than holding it down continuously. This conserves fuel over long distances and ensures you have enough thrust left to break your fall before landing.
Buy Two Exosuit Upgrades in Every Star System
Expanding your Exosuit inventory does not require searching solely for planetary drop pods. You can purchase two guaranteed inventory slots in every new star system you visit.
- Space Station: Land at the system's space station and visit the technology concourse. Interact with the glowing holographic exosuit chamber next to the upgrade vendor to purchase either a Cargo or Technology slot.
- Space Anomaly: Fly into space and summon the Space Anomaly. Proceed to the rear room behind Nada and Polo where the specialist kiosks stand. In the back-left corner next to the Exosuit research terminal, purchase a second slot from the holographic tube.
The terminal inside the Space Anomaly refreshes its inventory offer once per star system, matching the space station's availability.
Arrange Technology in 2x2 Grids for Adjacency Bonuses
Placing technology upgrades in a straight line or scattered across your inventory leaves potential stat multipliers unused. Placing compatible modules directly adjacent to one another creates colored border outlines that indicate active synergy bonuses.
- Use 2x2 Blocks: A square layout allows your strongest upgrade (such as an S-Class or X-Class module) to touch three compatible items at once, maximizing edge-to-edge bonuses.
- Anchor Core Systems: Position the main equipment—such as your Hyperdrive, Shield, or Pulse Engine—at the center or corner of the cluster so base stats receive the highest multiplier.
- Account for Module Limits: You can install up to three purchased upgrade modules per technology type in your Technology inventory. Craftable blueprint technologies do not count against this three-module limit and can sit alongside the cluster to extend synergy borders.
Scout Hazards with Photo Mode and Dig Emergency Shelters
Severe planetary storms can deplete hazard protection within seconds and obstruct your visibility. When caught in dangerous weather without recharging supplies, use built-in tools to stay safe:
- Scout in Photo Mode: Opening Photo Mode pauses environmental hazards and time in single-player sessions. Move the free camera upward and across the landscape to locate cave entrances, Sodium plants, or shelter landmarks without taking damage.
- Carve Artificial Shelter: If your hazard gauge is critically low and you lack Sodium or Ion Batteries, switch your Terrain Manipulator to mine mode and dig a short downward tunnel into the ground. Walking a few steps into the tunnel registers your character as indoors, allowing hazard shields to recharge fully without consuming resources.

I tried this today and it worked better than my old setup.
This helped me understand strategy much better.
I wish I had read this before upgrading the wrong thing.
Good guide for No Man's Sky players. The strategy part was useful.
