Surviving Permadeath mode in No Man's Sky requires immediate shelter, strict inventory control, cautious movement, and avoiding early combat. Because any death permanently erases your save file, your priority upon spawning is stabilizing your Hazard Protection inside a cave before working toward crafted recharge items and defensive upgrades.

Secure Underground Shelter Immediately

Your opening minutes on the spawn planet present the highest risk of failure. Extreme storms, toxic atmosphere, or freezing cold will drain your Hazard Protection before you can locate your starship.

  1. Find a cave immediately: Look for natural cave openings as soon as you gain control. Standing inside a cave stabilizes your core temperature and stops hazard drain without consuming fuel.
  2. Dig if no caves exist: As soon as you repair and fuel your Terrain Manipulator, dig an angled tunnel into the terrain to create artificial shelter.
  3. Stockpile basic elements underground: Mine Cobalt from stalactites and stalagmites, gather Marrow Bulb to refine into Sodium, and harvest Carbon from subterranean flora.
  4. Replenish Life Support: Gather Oxygen from red flora or hazardous flora before setting out across open ground. Keep at least one full stack on hand at all times.

Manage Restricted Inventory Stacks

Permadeath caps raw resource stacks at 250 units in general inventory and 500 units in cargo slots, compared to the 9,999-unit caps in Normal mode. Carrying loose raw elements rapidly fills your available slots.

Item TypePermadeath Cargo CapManagement Action
Ferrite Dust & Carbon500Keep one stack of each for basic repairs and mining tool fuel.
Sodium & Oxygen500Refine or craft into manufactured items to save space.
Ion BatteriesStacked itemsCraft from Cobalt and Ferrite Dust; use for instant shield recharges.
Life Support GelsStacked itemsCraft from Oxygen and Carbon; replaces raw Oxygen consumption.
Trade CommoditiesLimitedSell at the nearest terminal immediately to clear inventory slots.

Transitioning to manufactured Ion Batteries and Life Support Gels saves critical space. A single battery restores your Hazard Protection immediately, eliminating the risk of manually refilling gauges during blinding storms.

Prevent Fatal Jetpack Fall Damage

Fall damage scales aggressively in Permadeath mode. Dropping from moderate heights or misjudging momentum will instantly break your personal shields and deplete your core health, ending the run.

  • Never drain your boost midair: Always reserve a final burst of jetpack fuel to decelerate right before touching the ground.
  • Hug cliff faces: When descending deep ravines, face the wall directly. Jetpack fuel does not deplete while your character is sliding against vertical terrain collision geometry.
  • Disable aggressive melee-boosting: Avoid sprinting and boost-jumping over uneven, hilly ground where unexpected drops cause lethal impact speeds.
  • Keep distance from Horrors: The knockback from Biological Horrors and Abyssal Horrors can launch you high into the air, causing fatal fall damage upon landing.

Disengage From Sentinel Combat

Early-game combat carries lethal risk with minimal return. Sentinels hit significantly harder in Permadeath and call reinforcements quickly.

If a Sentinel drone detects you harvesting resources, stop mining immediately and walk out of its scan area. If combat triggers:

  1. Do not engage Sentinels with an un-upgraded Mining Beam or standard Bolt मानवीयcaster.
  2. Use the Terrain Manipulator to dig a deep, L-shaped tunnel into the ground.
  3. Seal the entrance behind you and remain still until the search timer expires and the alert clears.
  4. Never enter your starship and launch into low orbit during an active ground pursuit. Launching triggers hostile Sentinel interceptors, locking you into difficult space combat.

Build Long-Term Defenses

Once your starship is flight-ready, shift your focus from basic survival to active damage mitigation:

  • Stack Exosuit Shields: Purchase S-Class Shield Modules from Space Station technology merchants using Nanites. Installing three adjacent S-Class modules provides the defensive buffer needed to survive accidental predator attacks and stray hits.
  • Deploy an Exocraft: Construct an exocraft geobay—specifically for the Minotaur or Roamer—at your primary planetary base. The Minotaur completely shields the pilot from all extreme thermal, toxic, and radioactive conditions, allowing safe planetary harvesting without draining your Exosuit hazard gauges.
