To unlock the Icarus title in No Man's Sky, you must jump off an exterior fleet frigate pad in low planetary orbit and survive the freefall down to the planet's surface.

Completing this drop requires surviving intense Life Support and Hazard Protection depletion while falling through open vacuum, then braking with your jetpack immediately before touching down. Once you survive the landing, equip the unlocked title at any Appearance Modifier.

Required Preparations and Resources

Stepping into open space drains your Life Support gauge rapidly and depletes your Hazard Protection due to cosmic cold and radiation. Before flying up to your fleet, stock your inventory with quick-refill items:

  • Life Support Gels: Carry 10 to 15 Life Support Gels. A single gel fully refills your life support meter through the Quick Menu faster than loading raw Oxygen.
  • Ion Batteries: Carry a stack of Ion Batteries to instantly restore your Hazard Protection shield when cosmic temperatures drain it.
  • Jetpack Upgrades: Install A-class or S-class Movement System modules to increase your thruster tank capacity and recharge rate for the final descent.

Do not rely on raw resources like Carbon or Sodium, as manually loading them during freefall leaves little time to react. Keep your Quick Menu ready to access Life Support and Hazard Protection icons quickly.

Positioning Your Fleet and Choosing a Frigate

To make the drop manageable, minimize your descent distance and target solid ground:

  1. Fly into the upper atmosphere of a mild planet (such as a Lush, Paradise, or Verdant world).
  2. Look straight up and summon your freighter so it warps into low orbit directly above you.
  3. Fly out of the atmosphere and land directly on an exterior landing pad of one of your frigates rather than inside the freighter hangar.
  4. Pick a frigate that offers an unobstructed drop path toward land:

Walk to the edge of the landing platform and ensure you are positioned over land rather than a wide ocean before jumping.

Surviving the Descent

Once you step off the platform edge into open space, manage the descent in two distinct phases:

1. The Vacuum Phase

For the first 30 to 60 seconds, your suit remains in deep-space vacuum. Your Life Support gauge will deplete every few seconds, accompanied by suit alarms. Immediately use the Quick Menu to apply Life Support Gels and Ion Batteries whenever your meters drop. Save your jetpack fuel during this phase, as thrusters provide negligible steering in orbit.

2. Atmospheric Entry

As you pass through the upper cloud layer, atmospheric entry begins. Wind resistance will sound, and your life support consumption will return to standard planetary drain rates. Center your view downward to spot terrain features and monitor your distance to the surface.

Braking and Safe Landing

Hitting the ground at terminal velocity causes instant death, which fails the challenge.

  1. Allow gravity to carry you down without using the jetpack until you are roughly 100 to 150 units above the terrain.
  2. Feather your jetpack with short, controlled bursts to slow your downward speed. Do not hold the thrust continuously, or the fuel tank will empty before you reach the surface.
  3. Bring your descent speed to zero right above the ground and touch down cleanly.

Surviving the impact registers the completed drop and unlocks "the Icarus" title across your account.

How to Equip the Icarus Title

The title does not activate automatically upon landing. To display it:

  1. Visit an Appearance Modifier, located either on the technology mezzanine of any Space Station or constructed inside your freighter base.
  2. Open the Banner tab at the top of the interface.
  3. Select the Title category, scroll to "the Icarus," and confirm your selection to display it on your character.
