To win with the Stag clan in Northgard Battlegrounds, prioritize early frontline defense over aggressive rerolling, float your gold reserves to maximize interest, and use your accumulated Fame milestones to outscale opponents with high-tier champions and backline carries.
Unlike aggressive factions that push for early knockouts, Stag relies on economic compounding and passive stat buffs unlocked as your Fame grows. Rerolling early sacrifices this late-game advantage. Your immediate goal is surviving the opening stages with minimal health loss while building your economy.
Early-Round Drafting (Rounds 1–3)
During the first three rounds, focus entirely on drafting cost-effective melee units rather than searching for specific synergies.
- Prioritize Shield Bearers: Shield Bearers provide heavy damage mitigation, keeping your board alive long enough for basic attackers to clear enemy squads.
- Take baseline Warriors: Fill remaining slots with standard frontline fighters to avoid taking unmitigated round-loss damage.
- Skip shop refreshes: Never spend gold rerolling during rounds 1 through 3. Take the highest-stat units offered in the shop.
- Hold pairs on the bench: When identical frontline units appear, purchase them to prepare for two-star upgrades, provided you do not sacrifice interest thresholds.
Do not worry about maintaining a perfect win streak. Narrow defeats where you eliminate most opposing units preserve your life total while leaving your gold pool untouched for leveling.
Mid-Game Economy and Shop Progression
Stag converts surplus gold into higher tavern tiers faster than reroll-heavy clans. Maintain specific gold thresholds each round to earn maximum interest income.
| Phase and Rounds | Recommended Action | Economic Target |
|---|---|---|
| Rounds 1–3 (Tier 1) | Draft frontline Shield Bearers and Warriors; take the best raw stats offered | Spend base gold; do not reroll |
| Rounds 4–6 (Tiers 2–3) | Upgrade your tavern tier; recruit baseline ranged damage dealers | Float 10–20 Gold for interest |
| Rounds 7–9 (Tier 4) | Hunt core synergy pieces; hold pairs to complete three-star upgrades | Float 20–30 Gold; minimize rerolls |
| Rounds 10+ (Tier 5 Push) | Level to Tier 5; recruit Warchiefs, elite champions, and survivability relics | Spend down gold pool to finalize board |
Only break your savings floor if your board suffers multiple consecutive heavy losses or if buying a displayed unit immediately completes a major three-star upgrade.
Late-Game Army Composition
Once you reach Tiers 4 and 5, replace low-tier filler units with dedicated damage dealers and heavy faction units that scale with Stag's Fame bonuses.
Backline Ranged Carries
A defensive wall cannot win rounds without damage output. Introduce high-tier Axe Throwers or ranged spellcasters behind your tanks. These units exploit the extended combat duration created by Shield Bearers, burning down enemy frontlines before opposing dive units breach your formation.
High-Tier Champions and Warchiefs
Stag’s milestone bonuses grant passive combat stats across your army. High-tier champions, Warchiefs, and monstrous units gain the highest relative benefit from these multipliers. Target units with wide-area cleave attacks or team-wide defensive buffs to maximize survivability in extended skirmishes.
Warband Grid Positioning
Proper grid placement protects your fragile carries while funneling enemy attackers into your most durable units.
[Enemy Frontline]
--------------------------------------------------
[Row 1] [Shield Bearer] [Warchief] [Shield Bearer]
[Row 2] [Melee Off-Tank] [Utility Support]
[Row 3] [Ranged Carry] [Axe Thrower] [Ranged Carry]
- Front Row (Row 1): Place your highest-armor Shield Bearers on the outside edges and your Warchief in the center. This formation draws initial aggro and clumps approaching enemies together.
- Middle Row (Row 2): Position secondary bruisers and utility supports directly behind the front line to intercept flanking units.
- Back Row (Row 3): Tuck fragile ranged carries into the back corners. If facing opponents with backline divers, place an off-tank or utility unit adjacent to your carries to absorb initial strikes.
When selecting relics, choose options that grant sustained healing, extra warband capacity, or additional Fame generation to complement Stag's extended combat pacing.
