To hunt successfully as a Hatzegopteryx in Path of Titans, conserve your flight stamina by gliding at high altitudes, target lightweight prey with diving Clamp attacks, and rely on your beak reach when forced into ground combat. Because takeoff and mid-air sprinting deplete stamina rapidly, safe perches and strict target selection determine your survival.

Managing Flight Stamina and Perching

Takeoff consumes a large portion of your stamina bar immediately. Sprinting in the air drains the rest quickly, leaving you vulnerable to forced landings on dangerous ground. Treat mid-air sprinting purely as an escape or strike mechanism rather than your standard cruising speed.

To travel and scout without draining your reserves:

  1. Climb immediately: Ascend to high altitude right after launching to clear obstacles and establish a wide field of view.
  2. Transition to level glide: Gliding significantly reduces stamina consumption while maintaining cruising speed.
  3. Take wide turns: Avoid sharp banks, which bleed forward momentum and require stamina-costing wing beats to recover.
  4. Seek elevated roosts early: If your stamina falls below 30 percent, break off your search and land on a rock stack, cliff edge, or sheer bluff.

Resting on elevated terrain protects you from ground carnivores while your stamina regenerates. Avoid landing on flat plains or riverbanks unless you are confirming a kill.

Executing Aerial Dives and Using Clamp

Vertical diving converts height into flight speed without expending additional stamina. This allows you to close distance on ground prey before they can react or dodge into dense cover.

The Clamp ability lets you snatch lightweight prey directly off the ground:

  • Target selection: Focus on juveniles, small carnivores like Latenivenatrix, or smaller pterosaurs. Attempting to clamp heavy dinosaurs fails, instantly stops your momentum, and leaves you grounded.
  • The dive: Fold your wings from medium altitude to dive toward the target's projected travel path. Approach from the target's rear blind spot whenever possible.
  • The grab: Activate Clamp as your shadow crosses the target at low altitude to secure them in your beak.
  • The ascent: Immediately pitch upward to gain elevation away from protective adult dinosaurs or packmates.
  • The drop: Release the target from lethal fall-damage height or drop them onto rocky surfaces, then land to finish them if needed.

Ground Combat Tactics and Abilities

If an enemy catches you on the ground, do not attempt an immediate takeoff. The launch animation features a startup delay that allows grounded opponents to land free, heavy hits. Stand your ground and use your superior height and reach.

Ground AbilityPrimary ApplicationMajor Limitation
Beak Stab / PeckPunishing frontal charges from mid-tier predatorsNarrow forward hitbox requires direct aim
Wing Flail / KnockbackCreating space against pack hunters and raptorsDrains stamina quickly if spammed
Clamp (Ground)Grabbing small scavengers attempting to contest meatImmobilizes your movement while active
TakeoffDisengaging after creating adequate distanceStartup lag exposes you to incoming attacks

Backpedal while facing incoming attackers, aiming Beak Stabs downward into their heads as they advance. If smaller predators attempt to flank or pounce, deploy Wing Flail to knock them back and reset spacing.

Do not attempt prolonged face-trading against large apex predators like Tyrannosaurus or Spinosaurus. Your combat weight and health pool cannot match their raw damage output. Use your ground reach only to fend off mid-tier carnivores or buy enough space to launch safely into the air.

Target Matchups and Roaming Zones

Adjust your combat tactics based on the opponent's mobility:

  • Smaller pterosaurs (Thalassodromeus, Rhamphorhynchus): You deal far more damage, but they possess tighter turn radiuses. Avoid turning contests. Fly straight to force a chase, then air-brake to force them to overshoot into your beak.
  • Heavy ground apexes: Never engage these targets on the ground. Act as an aerial harasser by diving to land hit-and-run stabs when they commit to long attack recoveries, or when they sit down to rest.
  • Environment hazards: Watch for sudden rock outcroppings or cliff edges during high-speed dives. Crashing into terrain deals severe fall damage that can kill you outright.

For optimal hunting, patrol open biomes with abundant vertical relief, such as Grand Plains or the outskirts of Impact Crater. These areas combine high player traffic with cliffs and rock towers for safe perching. Avoid dense canopy zones like Redwoods, where heavy tree branches disrupt dive paths and provide grounded targets with easy cover.
