To maximize Hydro Pump in Pokémon Quest, teach the move to a fully evolved offensive Water-type Pokémon like Starmie, equip one Broadburst Stone alongside two Wait Less Stones, and stack Water-type Attack Bingo Bonuses.
When cast, Hydro Pump summons four forward-erupting water pillars. Because each pillar deals independent damage with built-in knockback, multiple pillars can strike large boss hitboxes simultaneously. Each hit also triggers your Pokémon's Hit Healing stat, allowing attackers to recover large amounts of health during combat.
Best Move Stone Setups for Hydro Pump
Hydro Pump has a base cooldown of 5 seconds and a wide spread. Equipping the proper Move Stones stabilizes the projectile pattern and reduces downtime between casts:
- 1 Broadburst Stone + 2 Wait Less Stones (Standard Setup): The primary setup for bosses and general farming. One Broadburst widens each pillar's eruption radius so the hitboxes overlap reliably on moving targets. Two Wait Less stones lower the 5-second cooldown to keep damage consistent.
- 2 Broadburst Stones + 1 Wait Less Stone (AoE Clearing): Increases the total coverage across the arena. This setup helps clear scattered waves of standard enemies at the expense of casting frequency.
Why Avoid Whack-Whack Stones
Do not equip Whack-Whack Stones to Hydro Pump. A Whack-Whack Stone forces your Pokémon to repeat the casting animation back-to-back, locking it in place and leaving it vulnerable to boss attacks. In addition, the knockback from the first four pillars routinely pushes enemies out of range, causing the second volley to miss entirely.
Best Pokémon for Hydro Pump
Hydro Pump cannot be learned by base-form Pokémon. You must evolve candidates before attempting to roll the move.
| Pokémon | Evolution Requirement | Cooking Recipe | Role & Strengths |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starmie | Evolve Staryu at Level 36 | Mouth-Watering Dip (3 Bluk Berry, 2 Tiny Mushroom) | Primary Attacker: High offensive stat weight and top-tier Water-type ATK Bingo Bonuses. |
| Golduck | Evolve Psyduck at Level 33 | Mouth-Watering Dip (via Psyduck) | Secondary Attacker: High offensive base stats; easily farmed and evolved early. |
| Seadra | Evolve Horsea at Level 32 | Mouth-Watering Dip (via Horsea) | Secondary Attacker: Early evolution level; rolls strong Water cooldown and attack bingos. |
| Tentacruel | Evolve Tentacool at Level 30 | Mouth-Watering Dip / Sludge Soup | Defensive Hybrid: Higher natural HP pool for survivability at the cost of clear speed. |
| Omastar | Evolve Omanyte at Level 40 | Brain Food / Stone Soup | Ranged Defense: Sturdy base stats, but harder to obtain ideal offensive bingos. |
Starmie is the top-performing user due to its tendency to roll offensive Power Stone grids and high Water-type damage bonuses. Golduck and Seadra serve as accessible, high-performing alternatives. While Blastoise, Lapras, and Poliwrath can also learn Hydro Pump, their defensive stat biases result in slower completion times.
Power Stone Grid and Bingo Priorities
To prevent one-shots while maximizing burst potential, balance your Power Stone slots and target specific Bingo Bonuses.
Bingo Bonuses
Look for bonuses that directly scale Water-type damage rather than generic flat stats:
- Slot 1: ATK of Water-Type Moves +5% (or Wait Time -5%)
- Slot 2: ATK of Water-Type Moves +10% (or Wait Time -10%)
- Slot 3: ATK of Water-Type Moves +15% to +20%
If damage bonuses do not appear, Wait Time reduction is the best alternative to accelerate your skill cycle.
Power Stone Slots and Sub-Stats
- Slot Distribution: Aim for 6 to 8 ATK slots and 1 to 3 HP slots. Running fewer than 6 ATK slots drags out encounters, while running zero HP slots leaves your attacker vulnerable to fatal hits from stage bosses.
- Hit Healing: Maximize this stat to its 10.0% hard cap across your Power Stones so Hydro Pump's multiple hits instantly restore lost health.
- Critical Hit Rate and Damage: Increases the damage output of individual pillar hits.
- Resist Status Conditions: Prevents freeze, paralysis, or burn effects from interrupting cast animations.
How to Teach Hydro Pump
- Evolve your Pokémon first: Staryu evolves into Starmie at level 36, Psyduck into Golduck at level 33, and Horsea into Seadra at level 32. Hydro Pump will not appear in the move pool of unevolved Pokémon.
- Cook basic Water fodder: Use the basic cooking pot with common blue ingredients (such as 3 Bluk Berries and 2 Tiny Mushrooms) to cook Mouth-Watering Dip a la Cube.
- Run Move Learning training: Use the low-level Water-type Pokémon as training partners. Same-type training partners yield significantly higher success rates.
- Preserve evolved fodder for later attempts: Because Move Training success rates decline with each consecutive attempt on the same Pokémon, save higher-level or fully evolved Water types for later rerolls if Hydro Pump does not appear early.

This helped me understand strategy much better.
The tips are practical and easy to follow.
Nice guide. I am checking the other Pokémon Quest articles next.
I tried this today and it worked better than my old setup.
