To clear Campaign Chapter 5 (Bessie Plateau) stages 5-1 through 5-3 with a free-to-play roster in Puzzles & Survival, switch off auto-battle, run a five-color rainbow team, and bank your active hero skills during the first two waves. Columns fire tiles directly upward into enemies, so you must aim matches beneath specific targets and send extra matches through empty lanes to charge your hero abilities before reaching the stage boss.

Team Composition and Setup

A balanced rainbow lineup (one Red, Green, Blue, Yellow, and Purple hero) is the most reliable setup for stages 5-1 to 5-3. Running all five affinities ensures that every tile match on the board deals combat damage and charges hero rage. Stacking a single color at this stage risks dead boards where off-color matches deal zero damage while standard zombies attack freely.

Before entering stage 5-1, complete the following preparations:

  • Level your core story heroes up to the chapter's recommended level threshold.
  • Unlock base combat skills for your primary damage dealers and support units.
  • Equip available basic gear to prevent fragile damage dealers from being eliminated by normal zombie attacks in early waves.

Stage 5-1: Wave Transitions and Skill Banking

Stage 5-1 consists of three waves of standard infected. Your objective is entering wave 3 with at least three offensive skills fully charged.

  1. Focus the center in wave 1: Tile columns travel straight up. Match tiles directly under the central zombie to clear it out while leaving side columns untouched.
  2. Preserve active skills in wave 2: Use normal 3-tile matches on the board rather than hero skills to finish weakened enemies. Overkilling a low-health zombie with an active ability wastes built-up rage.
  3. Burst the wave 3 leader: At the start of wave 3, immediately trigger your primed offensive skills on the stage leader before its attack counter reaches zero.

Stage 5-2: Managing Flank Enemies and Ghost Matching

Stage 5-2 features aggressive zombies positioned on the left and right edges. Leaving these flank enemies alive results in heavy chip damage while you target the center.

  • Check turn timers: Look at the turn countdown above each zombie. Direct your vertical matches into the enemy closest to taking a turn.
  • Clear edges with special tiles: Look for 4-match or 5-match opportunities near the board edges to create Grenades or Stun Bombs, which clear side lanes without requiring skill points.
  • Use ghost matches to rebuild rage: When a lane has no enemies remaining, match tiles in that empty column. These "ghost matches" deal no enemy damage but generate double rage for the matching hero, letting your squad recharge safely.
  • Hold support abilities: Avoid casting heals as soon as they become ready. Reserve healing skills until a frontline hero drops below 60% health, or activate them right before finishing wave 2.

Stage 5-3: Boss Wave Execution

Stage 5-3 pairs durable frontline tanks with high-damage support zombies across three waves.

  1. Clear waves 1 and 2 with board matches: Use basic matches and ghost lanes to eliminate enemies. When the final zombie of wave 2 drops below 25% health, defeat it using an off-color match to keep all five hero rage meters completely full.
  2. Unload single-target skills immediately: At the start of wave 3, fire your single-target burst abilities directly into the central boss before making a board move.
  3. Exploit elemental weaknesses: After using your hero skills, locate board tiles that match the boss's affinity weakness. Making a 4-match directly beneath the boss applies an elemental critical multiplier that can eliminate the boss before side adds overwhelm your team.

Grid Tactics for Manual Play

Auto-battle AI often expends high-damage abilities on nearly dead walkers, leaving teams defenseless for wave 3. Play stages 5-1 through 5-3 manually using these board rules:

  • Prioritize the bottom three rows: Matches made low on the board cause cascading drops across the entire grid. Cascades generate bonus combo damage and increase the chances of creating bombs.
  • Control your finishing hits: Once a wave is down to one enemy, stop matching your strongest hero's color directly into it. Use neutral columns or empty lanes to top off everyone's rage bar before moving to the next wave.
