To obtain 3rd Age equipment in RuneScape, you must farm and open Hard, Elite, or Master Treasure Trails caskets. 3rd Age items do not drop from Easy or Medium clues, nor do they drop directly from monsters. Because individual drop rates are exceptionally rare, acquiring these items requires maximizing casket volume and minimizing completion times.
3rd Age Drop Rates by Clue Tier
Each reward casket rolls a variable number of reward slots. Every slot independently rolls for a position on the mega-rare drop table, which is shared with non-3rd Age items such as gilded armor and potions.
| Clue Tier | Reward Slots per Casket | Approx. Odds for Any 3rd Age Item (Per Casket) | Distinct 3rd Age Rewards |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hard | 4–6 | ~1 in 35,000–42,000 | 3rd Age Melee, Mage, and Range equipment |
| Elite | 4–6 | ~1 in 5,800–7,000 | 3rd Age Cloak, Wand, Bow, Longsword |
| Master | 5–7 | ~1 in 851–1,000 | 3rd Age Pickaxe, Axe, Druidic set pieces |
On a Hard clue, each reward slot carries roughly a 1 in 16,250 chance to hit the mega-rare table, placing the odds of rolling any specific 3rd Age item at roughly 1 in 211,250 per slot. Master clues offer the best per-casket odds, making them the primary target for top-tier tools and Druidic gear.
Sourcing Hard and Elite Clues
You can source high-tier clues either through tradeable impling jars on the Grand Exchange or through direct combat.
Impling Jars (Fastest for Unrestricted Accounts)
Buying tradeable impling jars bypasses combat setup and provides immediate clue access:
- Hard Clues: Open Magpie or Nature impling jars. Magpie and Ninja implings provide the most reliable drop rates.
- Elite Clues: Open Dragon or Ninja impling jars.
Combat Drops
If you prefer combat or play an ironman account:
- Hellhounds (Hard Clues): Cannoning Hellhounds in the Witchaven Dungeon with an imbued Ring of Wealth yields Hard clues at a rate of 1 in 32. In the Wilderness, wearing a Ring of Wealth (i) while bursting or chinning designated Slayer targets doubles standard clue drop rates.
- Bossing (Elite Clues): Farming high-level bosses—specifically Vorkath, Zulrah, and the Phantom Muspah—provides steady Elite clue drops alongside general loot.
Generating Master Clues via Watson
Watson provides a deterministic path to Master clues by trading in lower tiers, bypassing the 1 in 5 random chance from Elite caskets or the 1 in 20 chance from lower tiers.
Located in his house in the Hosidius region of Great Kourend, Watson takes one Easy, one Medium, one Hard, and one Elite clue scroll simultaneously and rewards one Master clue scroll.
To keep Watson supplied with sets:
- Easy Clue: Pickpocket H.A.M. Members in the Lumbridge cellar while wearing full Rogues gear, or open Gourmet impling jars.
- Medium Clue: Open Eclectic impling jars, which yield Medium clues at a rate of 1 in 25.
- Hard Clue: Cannon Hellhounds or open Magpie implings.
- Elite Clue: Defeat high-tier bosses or open Dragon and Lucky impling jars.
Preparation and Completion Speed
Minimizing travel and bank time directly impacts your hourly casket rate. Complete the following setup steps before running large batches:
- Player-Owned House (POH): Build a maxed POH equipped with an Ornate Rejuvenation Pool, an Occult Altar, an Ornate Jewellery Box, and a Portal Nexus to handle map-wide travel. Carry POH teleport tablets or a Construction Cape.
- Teleport Scrolls: Stock a Master Scroll Book with key destination scrolls, including Watson, Zul-Andra, and Key Master teleports.
- STASH Units: Build and fill all Hard, Elite, and Master STASH (Store Tackle And Stocked Helpers) units. Pre-storing emote items such as dragon scimitars and heraldic rune armor preserves inventory space and removes bank runs.
Clue Juggling for High Requirements
Master clues frequently roll demanding skill checks, such as level 85 Slayer or level 90 Woodcutting. If your account lacks a required level or quest completion, use clue juggling:
- Drop your incomplete clue scroll on the ground. Dropped clue scrolls remain on the ground for up to one hour before despawning.
- Obtain a second clue scroll of the same tier and complete whichever steps you can perform. Step completions carry over across clues within the same tier.
- Pick up and refresh the dropped clues before the one-hour timer expires.
- Continue cycling steps between dropped clues until you hit requirements your account can fulfill to finish the casket.
