RuneScape's visual clean-up update refines the 3D geometry, shoulder pad placement, and texture scaling of modern Capes of Accomplishment without removing the classic 2006 retro design. To toggle between the modern appearance and the retro style, speak to any Skillcape seller across Gielinor or talk to the Wise Old Man in Draynor Village.
How to Toggle Between Modern and Retro Capes
Choosing a cape style is an account-wide setting that applies to every 99 cape in your inventory, equipment screen, and wardrobe interface.
- Locate any Skillcape vendor or the Wise Old Man in Draynor Village.
- Right-click the NPC and select the dialogue option to toggle your skillcape appearance.
- Confirm the switch between the modern silhouette and the retro design.
| Cape Style | Visual Characteristics | Where to Set It |
|---|---|---|
| Modern Style | Dynamic fabric drape, high-resolution crests, contoured shoulder trims, and updated cord tassels. | Default setting; toggled via Skillcape sellers or gameplay settings. |
| Retro Style | Traditional flat-backed silhouette, classic low-poly shoulder guards, and original 2006 icon geometry. | Toggled via Skillcape sellers, the Wise Old Man, or retro cosmetic overrides. |
If you created a cosmetic override using a Keepsake Key on a retro or modern cape, your wardrobe automatically displays the updated model geometry. You do not need to spend additional Keepsake Keys to apply the visual fixes to existing overrides.
What Changed in the Visual Clean-Up Update
The graphical adjustments address longstanding clipping and texture distortion issues on the modern models while making cape utility options more responsive.
Shoulder Rigging and Armor Clipping
- Clavicle Alignment: The cape armature has been re-weighted so shoulder accents sit closer to the character model's collarbones instead of floating above the avatar.
- Heavy Armor Compatibility: Shoulder guards conform more tightly to torso meshes, reducing clipping when paired with bulky chestplates such as Masterwork, Malevolent, or Torva armor.
- Female Avatar Adjustments: The cape mesh no longer flares outward unnaturally on female character models, closing the visual gap between the cape lining and the character's back.
Textures, Trim, and Milestone Capes
- Crisp Skill Crests: Skill icons—including the Slayer skull, Woodcutting axe, and Constitution heart—now feature higher-resolution borders that stay sharp when zooming out the camera.
- Trim Contrast: Accent borders on trimmed 99 capes have been widened and recolored to provide better contrast against base fabric colors, especially on skills like Farming and Herblore.
- Master and Milestone Capes: Seam lines around the neck and collar areas on 120 Master Capes and milestone capes have been smoothed to eliminate visible graphical breaks.
Inventory Icons and Perk Responsiveness
- Sprite Lighting: 2D inventory and bank icons now match the color saturation and lighting of the 3D worn models, making similarly colored capes easier to differentiate at a glance.
- Reduced Perk Input Delay: Right-click utilities—such as the Magic cape spellbook swap, Dungeoneering cape teleports, and Agility cape stamina restores—execute more reliably when queued during running or combat animations.
