In Sky: Children of the Light, use open-wing glide mode when you need horizontal speed to cross long distances, and switch to closed-wing hover mode when you need vertical lift, sharp turns, or a controlled landing.

You can switch between both flight stances at any time by pressing the stance toggle icon above the jump button or by using your controller's mapped trigger.

Flight Mode Differences

Each flight stance alters how cape flaps interact with momentum and gravity:

  • Closed-Wing Hover Mode: Your character maintains an upright posture. Each flap consumes one cape wedge to provide immediate vertical lift with slight forward movement. This mode allows 360-degree turning on the spot and immediate downward braking, but it creates heavy forward drag that makes covering horizontal distances inefficient.
  • Open-Wing Glide Mode: Your character tilts into a horizontal dive. Each flap converts cape energy into forward thrust. As long as you maintain forward momentum, your cape generates aerodynamic lift across long chasms. The trade-off is a much wider turning radius and no passive braking.

Crossing Long Chasms and Recharging in Clouds

Long transitional areas, such as the cloud corridor leading into Hidden Forest, require glide mode to maintain momentum. Flying through these corridors in hover mode causes your character to lose forward speed and drop prematurely into the lower fog.

To cross long distances without running out of energy:

  1. Enter Glide Mode Early: Switch to glide mode immediately after leaving the launch ledge or tunnel to catch the downward trajectory.
  2. Tilt Forward: Push your directional controls forward to convert altitude into speed with minimal wing flaps.
  3. Skim Cloud Walls: The white clouds bordering canyon routes act as continuous energy sources. Brush your character's cape or feet against the cloud edges to refill your cape wedges instantly.
  4. Chain Boost Flaps: While skimming the cloud boundary, tap the flap button to gain forward speed boosts. The cloud contact replenishes your spent light immediately, allowing continuous propulsion across the entire chasm.

Hover mode also recharges cape light inside clouds, but each flap forces your avatar upward rather than forward, which halts your travel speed.

How to Brake and Land Accurately

Remaining in glide mode all the way to a platform usually causes your avatar to overshoot the target, slide off narrow ledges, or crash into hazards.

To execute a precise landing:

  1. Approach in Glide: Use glide mode to carry speed toward your intended destination.
  2. Toggle to Hover Early: Switch to closed-wing hover mode approximately two character lengths above your landing spot.
  3. Engage Drag: Toggling to hover mode deploys natural air resistance, killing forward momentum and righting your character vertically.
  4. Cancel Remaining Inertia: Pull backward on your directional stick or movement keys while in hover mode to stop any leftover forward drift, letting your character drop directly onto the target surface.
