To safely escort a new player through the Golden Wasteland in Sky: Children of the Light, unlock friendship immediately to take flight control through hand-holding, recharge their flame with deep calls, and keep them behind solid cover to avoid Dark Dragons. Beginners operate with very few cape wedges, move unpredictably, and lose light quickly when exposed to hazards. Taking the lead prevents accidental separation and protects their Winged Light.
Securing Route Control Through Hand-Holding
Beginners—frequently called moths due to their brown starter capes—lack cape energy and often slide into hazardous zones. Taking the lead ensures your flight path, energy reserve, and landings determine their movement.
- Offer a candle: Honk to get the player's attention and offer a candle to unlock the basic friendship tree.
- Request hand-holding: Initiate hand-holding before passing through the broken archway of the Broken Temple.
- Maintain the piloting role: If the novice takes the lead, reclaim it by tapping the follow icon or offering your hand again to prevent them from straying into wind walls or out-of-bounds barriers.
Managing Cape Energy and Wasteland Hazards
When you tow another player, flight maneuvers consume your cape energy rather than theirs. Because novices carry few wing wedges, steer entirely clear of polluted dark water, which rapidly drains light reserves and extinguishes candles on contact.
| Hazard | Immediate Risk to Novices | Escort Countermeasure |
|---|---|---|
| Polluted Dark Water | Extinguishes flame and drains light stars | Fly along dry ridges; deep call to restore drained flame |
| Low Cape Wedges | Inability to cross dunes or scale ruins | Tow the player using your own wing flap capacity |
| Dark Crabs | Knockdown, broken hand-hold, lost candle | Charge a deep call to flip crabs before walking past |
| Dark Dragon Spotlights | Direct strike and loss of multiple Winged Light | Dive into covered ruins or pipes to break line of sight |
Map your flight paths around natural recharge sources, including spirit lanterns, glowing fungus clusters, and light blooms. Whenever you land on dry ground, hold down your avatar to execute a charged deep call. This releases a burst of light that recharges your passenger's flame if they take damage from sludge.
Neutralizing Dark Crabs
The Crab Fields and ship graveyard contain aggressive dark crabs that charge on sight. A direct hit knocks players down, severs the hand-holding link, and can push a novice into dark water.
To cross crab-dense areas safely:
- Land on solid ground several yards ahead of crab clusters rather than flying directly into their detection range.
- Execute a full deep call while holding your companion's hand to emit a shockwave that flips nearby crabs onto their backs.
- Burn dark plants only after neutralizing nearby crabs.
- Skip dark plants sitting in deep sludge unless you have stable footing on dry wreckage or floating debris.
Evading Dark Dragons (Krill)
Dark Dragons patrol the Graveyard and the Battlefield. Their blue searchlights turn red upon detecting a player, followed by an attack run within seconds. Beginners often panic and break away when targeted, leaving them vulnerable in open corridors.
- Use solid cover: Stop behind broken ruin walls, hollow bones, or stone arches to observe the dragon's patrol cycle.
- Move during sweep intervals: Advance to the next shelter only when the spotlight points away from your route.
- Break line of sight if spotted: If the spotlight turns red, do not try to outrun the dragon in open air. Dive immediately into a low-ceilinged pipe tunnel, trench, or cave until the searchlight resets.
Recovering Lost Winged Light After an Attack
If a Dark Dragon strikes or a player is completely extinguished by dark water, their avatar enters a crawling state, and their collected Winged Light scatters nearby as glowing, bouncing stars. These stars shatter permanently if not retrieved before their timer runs out.
- Restore their core flame: Rush to the downed player immediately and pull out your candle to ignite their avatar and halt further light loss.
- Retrieve scattered light: Sweep the immediate perimeter to pick up their ejected Winged Light stars before the countdown ends.
- Regroup at shelter: Re-link hand-holding, retreat to the nearest sheltered structure, and remain there until both avatars fully recharge before advancing to the realm's final temple gates.

Can you add more details about strategy in a future update?
This helped me understand strategy much better.
This guide answered the exact question I had.
Nice guide. I am checking the other Sky: Children of the Light articles next.
