To execute an effective open-field swarm in Viking Rise Kingdom vs Kingdom (KvK), move your alliance in a compact formation ("deathball"), focus all squad damage simultaneously onto single overextended enemy targets, and pull wounded marches behind friendly lines before taking severe casualties.
In late-season KvK wars, individual high-power squads cannot survive against dozens of coordinated attackers. Swarming relies on burst damage that eliminates an enemy squad in three to five seconds, overwhelming enemy shields, passive healing, and defensive skill procs before they can stabilize.
Target Selection and Isolation
Never attack directly into the center of an opposing deathball, as doing so exposes your troops to area-of-effect (AoE) abilities and counter-swarms. Alliance commanders and frontline fighters should focus strictly on the enemy formation's perimeter.
| Target Priority | Enemy Profile | Tactical Value | Execution |
|---|---|---|---|
| High | Flanking cavalry or fast pursuers overshooting their pack | High damage threat with minimal support | Collapse the entire frontline onto the isolated runner before they can retreat. |
| Medium | Slow infantry or archers lagging during a retreat | High vulnerability and slow disengagement | Cut off their escape vector toward friendly territory using manual march pathing. |
| Low | Core defensive/tank squads inside the main cluster | High survivability and heavy counter-AoE potential | Ignore until the outer perimeter targets are eliminated. |
| Do Not Engage | Squads standing directly on fortified alliance structures | Backed by reinforcement streams and structure fire | Kite backward to draw them onto neutral open ground. |
Exploit enemy click-pathing errors to create target opportunities. When an enemy player clicks an allied march that is actively retreating, their squad naturally pulls away from their allied cluster. The moment this separation happens, the entire frontline must immediately retarget that single overextended march.
Formation Movement and Kiting
A swarm collapses if individual players charge forward on their own. Allied marches must move as a cohesive unit to avoid getting picked off by counter-swarms.
- Assign a spatial anchor: Pick an alliance lead march or designated vanguard player. All allied marches must manually path around this anchor rather than relying on automatic movement commands.
- Kite when pressured: If the enemy advances aggressively, slowly move the deathball backward toward friendly territory. Kiting stretches the opposing formation, pulling their faster units ahead of slower support marches.
- Trigger the collapse: As soon as an enemy squad overextends, halt the retreat and converge every allied march onto that single target.
March Rotation and Hospital Management
Open-field swarms prevent hospital overflow by eliminating threats before they deal sustained normal attack damage. However, players must actively manage individual march health to prevent dead troops and avoid exhausting healing speedups.
- Observe the health threshold: When an individual march dips into yellow or low orange health, pull it out of combat immediately.
- Drop enemy aggro: Direct your wounded squad deep behind the friendly deathball. Enemy squads targeting your unit will typically break pursuit rather than dive into your allied pack, dropping lock-on aggro.
- Swap frontline squads: Cycle a fresh march into the frontline while the damaged squad recovers, maintaining local numerical superiority.
Voice Calls and Display Settings
Visual clutter in massive server battles makes manual targeting difficult. Before engaging in heavy KvK warfare, open game settings and enable simplified march displays to reduce extraneous animations and visual effects. This ensures target clicks register accurately during large clashes.
Designate a dedicated target caller in an alliance voice channel. The caller must direct focus fire by specifying enemy player tags, commander portraits, or map coordinates. When a target is called, all combatants must immediately switch to that unit, ignoring their previous target to maximize burst damage.

I wish I had read this before upgrading the wrong thing.
This guide answered the exact question I had.
This helped me understand early game much better.
Nice guide. I am checking the other Viking Rise articles next.
