To occupy a Level 1 Altar in Viking Rise, your tribe must build Tribal Banners until your territory touches the Holy Site's border, defeat the neutral guardian garrison with an organized rally, and hold the structure continuously until the occupation timer finishes.

Level 1 Altars are designed for early-game progression. Their neutral NPC guardians use low-tier, unspecialized units without punishing area-of-effect skills. As a result, a single full rally from an active tribe can defeat them with minimal casualties, generating mostly lightly wounded troops rather than severe losses.

Territory Prerequisites

A tribe cannot march on or rally against an Altar across open land without an active territory link.

  • Border Connection: Your tribe's border must physically connect to the Altar's zone. If the border falls short, the game prevents any attack commands.
  • Banner Placement: Build Tribal Banners in a direct line toward the Altar ahead of time to conserve Tribe Honor and resources.
  • Path Obstacles: Tribe leaders and officers should clear trees or other map obstructions along the planned banner line to avoid delays before the Altar's shield drops.

Once territory touches the site, all members can path marches and reinforce rallies directly at the target.

Rally Setup and Troop Selection

Numerical superiority is the main factor in defeating neutral guardians quickly. The assault should be organized around your tribe's strongest available stats:

  1. Assign the Rally Leader: Choose the player with the highest Chief Hall level, highest Rally Capacity, and most advanced Military Technology. Even if participants use Tier 2 or Tier 3 troops, a high-capacity rally easily overwhelms the defenders.
  2. Select Commanders: The rally leader should deploy primary heroes with high Leadership or specific unit damage bonuses. Secondary heroes should provide march speed, sustained healing, or active skill damage to shorten combat.
  3. Match Troop Types: Participating members must send their highest-tier combat troops matching the rally leader's unit specialization. Do not send gathering commanders or slow siege carts, as they reduce rally effectiveness.
  4. Set Rally Timing: Choose a 5-minute or 10-minute rally countdown depending on member distance. Launching from a tribal member or camp positioned close to the Altar minimizes travel time and reduces the window for rival tribes to contest the area.

Managing the Occupation Timer

Defeating the NPC garrison triggers an occupation progress bar rather than instant capture.

  • Automatic Garrison: When the guardians fall, the rally leader's remaining forces immediately enter the Altar as the initial defense.
  • Immediate Reinforcements: Allied members must instantly dispatch combat troops to fill the Altar's garrison capacity to its limit.
  • Defense Against Rivals: A full garrison deters rival tribes from attempting a steal. If contested, your reinforced defenders fight with the Holy Site's defensive structures supporting them.

The tribe gains full ownership once the occupation timer runs out without interruption.
