To reach Chief's Hall 20 and unlock Tier 4 (T4) troops within 40 days as a free-to-play player in Viking Rise, you must build only the mandatory structures required for each Hall upgrade, maintain two active construction queues, and reserve your universal speedups for Academy 20 and military research.
40-Day Milestone Schedule
Dividing your progression into three phases keeps construction and research moving without spreading resources across unnecessary buildings:
- Days 1–10 (Chief's Hall 1 to 12): Complete early tutorial chapters, secure a secondary builder queue using mission tokens or gems, and recruit basic troops. Establish map gathering routines to supply construction.
- Days 11–25 (Chief's Hall 13 to 16): Train Tier 3 units to handle PvE objectives and carry resources. Shift gathering marches toward Stone, and keep the Academy upgrading steadily.
- Days 26–40 (Chief's Hall 17 to 20 and T4 Unlock): Direct all universal speedups and active gathering marches toward Chief's Hall prerequisites, Defensive Wall levels, and Academy 20. Once Academy 20 completes, channel your research queue directly into the individual T4 troop technologies.
Mandatory Chief's Hall Prerequisites
Upgrading the Chief's Hall requires a Defensive Wall of the preceding level plus one specific companion facility per tier. Upgrading other settlement buildings during this sprint diverts builders and resources away from your 40-day target.
| Target Chief's Hall | Required Defensive Wall | Companion Structure Required | Primary Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hall 14 | Wall Level 13 | Lumber Mill 13 | Supplies lumber for structural prerequisites |
| Hall 16 | Wall Level 15 | Infirmary 15 | Expands hospital capacity for PvE losses |
| Hall 18 | Wall Level 17 | Quarry 17 | Supports late-tier stone requirements |
| Hall 19 | Wall Level 18 | Tribe Hall 18 | Increases Tribe help capacity to cut timers |
| Hall 20 | Wall Level 19 | Academy 19 | Unlocks Academy 20 for T4 military research |
Do not level all four troop training camps simultaneously. Keep one primary troop camp leveled alongside your Hall prerequisites and leave the remaining three lower until Chief's Hall 20 is finished.
Academy Research Progression
Unlocking T4 troops requires Academy 20 and the completion of preceding military and economic nodes.
- Economic Branch: Research only the minimum prerequisites needed to open downstream military nodes and core gathering speed upgrades. Avoid investing in late-tier production nodes, as passive production yields far fewer resources than active gathering.
- Military Branch: Advance prerequisite combat nodes to the minimum required level to unlock subsequent tiers. Do not over-invest in side branches until your primary unit type prerequisites are met.
- T4 Research Queues: Once Academy 20 finishes, commit your research queue directly to the individual T4 troop technologies. These research timers span multiple days, making active speedup management essential.
Gathering and Speedup Management
Stone and Gold shortages represent the main bottlenecks between Hall 16 and Hall 20:
- Target High-Level Stone: Wood and Food are abundant from early quest rewards, but late-game walls and halls require millions of Stone. Keep your gathering marches dispatched to high-level map deposits whenever troops are not clearing PvE camps.
- Wait for Tribe Helps Before Using Speedups: Never apply speedups immediately after starting an upgrade. Tribe helps reduce a percentage of the remaining base timer. Allowing your Tribe to fill help requests first maximizes the time saved before you spend consumable speedups.
- Maintain the Secondary Builder Queue: Use temporary builder tokens from events and chapter quests, or purchase temporary contracts with complimentary gems. Letting the secondary builder queue expire cuts your construction capacity in half.
Pitfalls That Delay the Day-40 Target
- Over-training Low-Tier Units: Training large numbers of Tier 1 and Tier 2 units consumes Food needed for Hall and Wall upgrades. Train only what is necessary to fill gathering marches and clear essential PvE content.
- Leveling Non-Essential Territory Plots: Upgrading internal farms and lumber camps provides low yields relative to active world-map gathering. Leave auxiliary resource plots at low levels.
- Using Universal Speedups on Troop Healing: Healing injured units with universal speedups exhausts resources required for Academy 20 and T4 research. Rely on dedicated healing speedups or natural hospital recovery.
- Remaining in an Inactive Tribe: A low-activity tribe slows construction and research by failing to max out daily help counters. Join an active tribe to ensure help requests fill quickly.

Nice guide. I am checking the other Viking Rise articles next.
I tried this today and it worked better than my old setup.
Can you add more details about strategy in a future update?
This helped me understand strategy much better.
