Upon reaching level 4 as a Mage in Eternium, recruit the warrior companion Marcus to serve as your frontline melee tank. Positioning behind Marcus keeps your fragile spellcaster safe from melee swarms while clearing early Act 1 objectives, specifically collecting glowing mushrooms and recovering the lost ring.

Combat Positioning and Companion Control

Before level 4, a solo Mage must continually kite enemies to survive incoming melee hits. Marcus changes your combat dynamic by charging directly at hostile packs and drawing their initial aggro, neutralizing fast-moving skeletons and beasts before they reach your casting line.

To maximize Marcus's effectiveness in combat:

  • Maintain a buffer: Stay five to eight yards behind Marcus. Moving slightly to his flank rather than standing directly behind him prevents your Mage from catching frontal cleave attacks or stray projectiles, while giving your basic attacks clear diagonal firing lines through the enemy pack.
  • Initiate with Marcus: Let your companion initiate each encounter before you begin casting gesture abilities or basic attacks.
  • Use warrior crowd control: Trigger Marcus's active leap ability when enemies pack together in narrow corridors. The resulting stun stops advancing mobs, granting you uninterrupted time to draw spell gestures and complete attack rotations.
  • Recover broken aggro safely: If an enemy breaks aggro and rushes your Mage, do not run into unexplored territory where you risk pulling extra packs. Circle tightly around Marcus so pursuing enemies cross into his melee attack radius, allowing his attacks to regain aggro while you slow the target with Frostbolt.

Act 1 Objectives: Mushrooms and the Lost Ring

Act 1 requires completing distinct side objectives alongside main story progression. Rushing straight toward stage exit portals causes you to miss harvestable items and quest-specific targets.

Collecting Glowing Mushrooms

Glowing mushrooms spawn off the main path in dead ends, alcoves, and dense foliage. These nodes are commonly guarded by small clusters of skeletons. Fully clear each side branch before interacting with the mushroom nodes. In addition to fulfilling your quest quota, clearing these optional areas yields treasure containers, gold, and baseline green gear needed for upcoming story bosses. Always verify your quest checklist before stepping through a stage exit portal to avoid repeating the level.

Retrieving the Lost Ring

The lost ring drops from a designated Act 1 encounter featuring an elite enemy with higher health and harder-hitting attacks that can kill an unshielded level 4 Mage in two to three strikes.

To complete the encounter safely:

  1. Command Marcus to leap into the center of the enemy pack to stun the targets and take the initial burst damage.
  2. Target secondary adds first using Arcane Bolts and gesture spells to quickly reduce the number of incoming hits against Marcus.
  3. Keep your distance from the isolated elite, watch for telegraphed attack indicators, and whittle the target down with ranged spells until the ring drops.

Early Mage Gear and Stat Priorities

Invest your defensive stats into Marcus while focusing your Mage on offensive output:

  • Mage Attributes: Prioritize Power and Haste on your Mage’s equipment to maximize damage scaling and casting speed.
  • Marcus Attributes: Equip Marcus with gear heavy in Armor and Health so he can survive sustained melee pressure.
  • Weapon Upgrades: Replace your staff or wand whenever a drop offers higher base weapon damage, as early spell damage scales directly from your primary weapon.
  • Gems and Town Preparation: Slot any low-level gemstones you find into open sockets for immediate stat bonuses. Salvage or sell unwanted items in town to accumulate gold for inventory expansions and early ability upgrades.
