To survive a pure melee "Caveman" challenge in FATE: Reawakened, build exclusively around physical combat by putting stat points into Strength and Vitality, using blunt weapons and shields, and letting your companion pet draw enemy aggression.

This self-imposed restriction bans all offensive and utility magic, spell scrolls, caster books, and ranged weaponry like bows or crossbows. Because you cannot soften targets from a distance or rely on summon spells, success depends on controlling line-of-sight in dungeon corridors and out-sustaining incoming damage.

Caveman Challenge Rules

Before starting, establish the boundaries of the run:

  • Zero Magic: Never cast offensive spells, summons, or area-of-effect spells. Keep spellbooks and scrolls off your hotbars.
  • Bludgeons Only: Equip only blunt melee weapons, including clubs, maces, and heavy hammers. Ranged weapons are prohibited.
  • Pure Physical Gearing: Prioritize raw armor values, physical attack bonuses, and resistances over magical spell modifiers.

Attribute Allocation

Every level-up point must support direct melee trading. Avoid splitting points into Magic, as mana has no value for this playstyle.

AttributeAllocationPrimary Purpose
Strength60%–70%Raises base melee damage and meets gear requirements for heavier armor and clubs.
Vitality30%–40%Expands your total health pool and boosts passive health recovery.
DexterityAs NeededInvest token points only if melee swings begin missing evasive monsters.
Magic0%Completely uninvested throughout the entire playthrough.

Strength serves as your primary attribute to ensure your attacks scale with deeper dungeon floors. Vitality provides the necessary cushion against burst damage when closing the distance against elite packs.

Weapon and Equipment Setup

Weapon selection dictates your damage output and vulnerability:

  • One-Handed Mace and Shield: The safest configuration for the challenge. A shield provides passive block chance to absorb frontal blows, letting you trade hits safely against dungeon champions.
  • Two-Handed Clubs: Delivers higher damage per hit, but slower attack recovery leaves you vulnerable to getting swarmed by multiple enemies.
  • Stat Affixes to Target: Look for gear with flat physical damage increases, attack speed buffs, and life steal properties.
  • Defensive Affixes: Prioritize high base armor alongside fire, ice, and lightning resistances. Elemental resistance reduces lethal burst damage from distant spellcasters while you close the gap.

Managing Dungeon Combat Without Spells

Without ranged abilities to thin out hostile groups, charging directly into open rooms will lead to being overwhelmed. Use dungeon architecture to force favorable engagements:

  1. Break Line of Sight: When encountering ranged casters or archers, retreat behind doorways or around corners. This forces ranged monsters to walk into your melee reach.
  2. Funnel Enemy Packs: Fight inside narrow hallways so only one or two monsters can attack you at a time, preventing mobs from flanking your position.
  3. Eliminate Casters First: Once a mixed group closes in, step past standard melee fodder to take down healers and ranged spellcasters immediately.
  4. Stock Quickslot Potions: Health potions are your only healing source without restoration magic. Keep high-tier healing draughts bound to accessible hotkeys at all times.

Pet Tactics and Management

Your companion pet fulfills the frontline roles typically handled by summoned minions and crowd control:

  • Transformations: Feed your pet fish to transform it into durable, high-health forms capable of absorbing elite attacks.
  • Aggression Setting: Set your pet's behavior to aggressive so it initiates combat ahead of you. This pulls initial attacks and allows you to flank targets while their attention is split.
  • Town Runs: Send your pet back to town to sell surplus loot, including valuable wands, staves, and spell scrolls that your character cannot use. This clears inventory space for health potions and town portal scrolls without forcing you to abandon dungeon progress.
