Because enemies do not scale to your level, your immediate priority when encountering an overwhelming foe is to retreat.

Mastering Early Combat and Positioning

Combat in Gothic Classic requires careful timing and spatial management rather than fast button inputs. Because starting animations are slow and clumsy, trading hits directly with enemies will lead to quick deaths.

Follow these rules during encounters:

• Observe attack tells: Wait for an enemy to commit to an attack animation before swinging your weapon. Strike only during their recovery window.
• Strafe to dodge: Use side-stepping movement to evade incoming hits. Relying on blocking will quickly drain your guard against strong opponents.
• Control group fights: When outnumbered, focus on the weakest target first to drop enemy damage output. Funnel hostile groups into narrow spaces to prevent them from encircling you.
