To reach the outer edge of the galaxy in No Man's Sky, activate an ancient planetary Portal and dial high-order glyph sequences to warp directly to the perimeter, bypassing thousands of manual hyperdrive jumps. Once you arrive at the outer threshold, use a long-range starship or freighter to navigate the sparse boundary stars known as the Fade.
Galaxy Geometry and the Fade Boundary
Galaxies in No Man's Sky are shaped like flattened discs surrounding a supermassive galactic core. Standard playthroughs spawn players roughly 700,000 light-years away from coordinate zero. While core progression routes direct travelers inward, warping in the opposite direction leads to the procedural edge of the galaxy.
The galaxy map thins out between 1,150,000 and 1,160,000 light-years from the center. At this perimeter, known as the Fade, system density drops sharply from interconnected clusters to isolated stars separated by wide voids. Distant points of light visible past this boundary in the skybox are visual artifacts rather than selectable star systems.
Fast-Tracking to the Edge Using Planetary Portals
Manual travel from your starting location to the outer rim requires thousands of jumps. Using a planetary Portal overrides your position and teleports you near the boundary in a single jump.
- Obtain Alien Cartographic Data: Buy Alien Cartographic charts from a Space Station Cartographer using Navigation Data.
- Find an Alien Monolith: Trigger the charts on a planet until a Monolith is marked. Solve the Monolith's interaction, speak to it a second time, and gift a faction relic (Gek Relic, Vy'keen Dagger, or Korvax Casing) to locate a Portal.
- Charge the Portal: Deposit standard elements (Carbon, Oxygen, Sodium, and Copper or Cobalt) into all 16 glyph slots.
- Input Boundary Glyphs: Enter high-order glyph sequences. While repeating the first glyph (Sunset) teleports ships toward the galactic core, leading with higher-order glyphs like Dragonfly, Face, or Tree patterns pushes the arrival point past the 1,100,000-light-year threshold.
| Requirement | Acquisition Source | Rim Travel Role |
|---|---|---|
| Alien Cartographic Chart | Space Station Cartographer | Locates Alien Monoliths |
| Faction Relic | Trading Outposts or damaged containers | Triggers Portal coordinates at Monoliths |
| Charged Portal Glyphs | Traveler Graves or the Artemis storyline | Powers coordinate input to the outer rim |
| Warp Hypercores | Crafted from Storm Crystals and Antimatter | Refuels long-range hyperdrives efficiently |
Hyperdrive Requirements for Outer Rim Navigation
Because systems in the Fade are spaced much farther apart than core clusters, low-range starships cannot bridge the gaps between boundary stars.
Prepare your vessel before initiating the Portal jump:
- Starships: Equip an Explorer-class starship or a Sentinel Interceptor with three procedural S-Class or X-Class Hyperdrive modules to achieve jump ranges between 2,500 and 3,500 light-years.
- Freighters: Summon an upgraded capital Freighter equipped with Freighter Warp Drives and auxiliary upgrades to achieve jumps up to 5,000 light-years.
- Fuel Reserves: Carry stacks of Warp Hypercores to maintain jump readiness without filling inventory slots with standard Warp Cells.
Phantom Stars and Map Limits
When you angle the Galaxy Map directly away from the core at the outer rim, colorful nebula clouds disappear into total blackness.
During boundary navigation, you may spot faint, named star nodes that cannot be selected or targeted. These are Phantom Stars. They exist within the coordinate seed data but lie outside the game's rendered travel volume. If a star system cannot be highlighted on the Galaxy Map, the engine will not generate an instance, meaning you cannot warp to it. Focus your jumps strictly on selectable systems at the visual fringe.
Establishing a Permanent Boundary Base
Securing a base on the galaxy's perimeter provides a permanent return point via the teleportation network:
- Select the outermost reachable star system on your travel corridor and scan the local planets.
- Land on the planet situated furthest from the core and deploy a Base Computer.
- Claim the site and build a Teleport Receiver alongside a reliable power source, such as Solar Panels and Batteries.
- Open Photo Mode to record the 12-glyph planetary address shown in the lower-left corner of the screen.
Once the base and teleporter are powered, you can freely travel to and from the boundary through any standard Space Station teleporter without repeating the Portal setup.

I tried this today and it worked better than my old setup.
This guide answered the exact question I had.
Can you add more details about strategy in a future update?
Good guide for No Man's Sky players. The strategy part was useful.
