When fighting without weapons or gear in Saints Row: The Third, win encounters by purchasing Melee Damage upgrades from the player menu, chaining finisher moves for brief invulnerability, and using the grab mechanic to turn enemies into human shields.
Stripped of standard firearms, success depends on maintaining crowd control and managing your vulnerability against groups of opponents.
Essential Unarmed Melee Tactics
Unarmed strikes land faster than heavy weapon swings, making rapid melee combos your primary offensive tool to stagger enemies before they strike back.
- Chain Finishers for Invulnerability: When an enemy sustains enough damage, press the finisher prompt displayed above their head. Finishers remove the target instantly and trigger a brief invulnerability window, protecting you from surrounding attackers.
- Upgrade Melee Damage Early: Open the player menu to purchase Melee Damage upgrades as soon as they become available. Higher-tier enemies feature larger health pools; without upgraded damage, extended fistfights leave you open to getting swarmed.
- Control Space and Lines of Sight: Avoid standing in open spaces where enemies can surround you. Move laterally toward tight corridors or walls to force targets into a single line in front of you.
Defensive Maneuvers and Crowd Management
Without armor or distance weapons, taking direct hits depletes your health bar rapidly. Adapt your survival strategy by leveraging defensive grabs and hit-and-run tactics.
- Use Human Shields: Activate the grab command on an isolated opponent to hold them in front of you. The grabbed target absorbs incoming melee attacks from other enemies, giving you time to reposition.
- Stun with Environmental Collisions: Knocking enemies into walls or light objects creates a temporary stun state. Staggered enemies become immediately vulnerable to finisher prompts.
- Dodge-Roll Heavy Swings: Armored or heavy opponents resist light melee strikes and cannot be grappled immediately. Bait their slow, telegraphed attacks, dodge-roll out of range, and retaliate only after their swing finishes.
- Disengage to Regenerate: If your health enters the red, break line of sight immediately. Retreat around corners to let your health recover before engaging the remaining enemies one by one.

Can you add more details about strategy in a future update?
This guide answered the exact question I had.
This saved me time in the early game.
I wish I had read this before upgrading the wrong thing.
