You can enter the secret Nintendo Mario area in Sky: Children of the Light without owning an official Nintendo Switch pack cape or having a cape-wearing friend guide you. By equipping the handheld Camera prop in the Golden Wasteland social space, you can use the viewfinder transition to clip past the portal collision and reach the entry pipe.
Nintendo Barrier Location and Setup
The barrier leading to the Mario area is located in the Golden Wasteland social space, situated before the drop down into the broken temple dunes.
- Arrive at the Golden Wasteland entrance from Home or Aviary Village.
- Turn toward the right side of the starting platform, looking across the cloudy gap.
- Locate the stone ruins and green pipes built into the cliffside wall.
- Approach the portal opening, which features a glowing barrier marked with the Nintendo Switch icon.
Normally, crossing this threshold requires wearing either the red or blue Nintendo cape from the Nintendo Switch pack. Without the cape, an invisible wall blocks entry. However, the game loads the pipe transition corridor directly behind the collision boundary, making it accessible if your avatar clips past the seam.
Preparation Checklist
- Equip the Camera prop: Equip the handheld Camera prop (introduced during the Season of Moments) to your back slot at a cosmetic shrine.
- Remove bulky cosmetics: Unequip large capes or neck pieces that obstruct your view of your feet and shoulders.
- Set a neutral stance: Use the default standing posture to prevent unexpected shifting.
How to Perform the Camera Clip
To perform the clip, wedge your avatar into the corner where the transparent barrier meets the rock wall, then manipulate the camera perspective.
- Position in the seam: Walk directly into the narrowest corner where the edge of the barrier plane intersects the rocky terrain. Face directly into the crease.
- Open the Camera: Tap the Camera prop icon to pull out the camera and enter first-person viewfinder mode.
- Aim down and inward: Pan the view downward toward your avatar's feet and angle the lens into the wall or through the translucent barrier mesh.
- Push forward: Walk forward slightly while still in camera mode, pressing your character against the wall until the camera view pushes through the barrier surface.
- Exit camera mode: Close the camera interface. As the view returns to the standard third-person perspective, the game recalculates your avatar's hitbox position, pushing you forward past the collision line.
- Walk forward immediately: Move forward the moment the viewfinder closes. Your character will pass the barrier boundary and drop into the green pipe corridor.
If your character bounces back outside the gate, step back into the corner seam, adjust your camera angle slightly lower or tighter toward the rock edge, and try the exit sequence again. Do not jump or flutter your wings while setting up, as gaining height will dislodge your character from the crease.
Navigating the 2D Mario Area
Once you enter the green pipe behind the barrier, the game transports you into the retro obstacle course:
- Camera perspective: The camera locks into a fixed, side-scrolling 2D plane. Standard 3D turning is disabled.
- Movement and flight: Your running and wing flaps are restricted to horizontal and vertical movement. To cross wide gaps between floating platforms, flap your wings at the peak of your jump instead of attempting forward flight arcs.
- Environment features: The course includes retro sound effects, brick blocks, question-mark boxes, and candle clusters to collect.
- Exiting the zone: When finished, jump into the warp pipe located at the end of the platforming course, or open the pause menu and select the option to return to Home or Aviary Village.
