In Sky: Children of the Light, Valley Elder masks grant an active defensive shield that intercepts lethal attacks before they scatter your Winged Light. Unlike cosmetic headwear, an Elder mask absorbs heavy hits from hazards like Dark Dragons and flying rocks in the Eye of Eden. Once shattered, the shield remains inactive until you repair it at a realm altar or in Orbit.

How the Mask Shield Mechanic Works

An active Elder mask displays a soft golden glow across its surface, confirming the shield is ready. Under standard gameplay rules, taking damage when your flight energy is completely depleted causes your character to drop Winged Light wedges.

Wearing an active Elder mask changes how lethal hits register:

  • Impact absorption: When struck by a lethal blow, the mask triggers a bright barrier flash and an audible chime, absorbing the damage completely.
  • Wedge retention: You do not lose or scatter any Winged Light from an attack absorbed by the shield.
  • Depletion state: Once incoming damage exhausts the barrier, the mask loses its golden aura and visibly cracks. While cracked, it functions strictly as a cosmetic item.
  • Drain limitation: The shield only triggers against direct physical impacts. It does not prevent gradual flight energy drains caused by environmental hazards such as rain or dark water.

Hazard Protection Comparison

Different hazards interact with the mask shield depending on their damage output:

Threat TypeShield ReactionWinged Light Retained
Dark Dragon (Krill)Absorbs one charging strike; shatters the shield instantlyYes (retains all wedges)
Eden Flying Red RocksAbsorbs high-impact rock strikes until durability breaksYes (prevents knockdown loss)
Dark CrabsAbsorbs charging hits without immediately breakingYes
Rain and Polluted WaterDoes not activateNo (energy drains normally)

Against a Dark Dragon, the shield acts as a one-time safety net. The charge breaks the mask immediately, but your avatar stays intact without losing 3 to 5 Winged Light wedges. In the Eye of Eden, the barrier absorbs flying red rocks during the final statue run, preventing knockdowns along exposed paths until continuous exposure depletes its charges.

How to Unlock the Valley Elder Masks

Unlocking either Valley Elder mask requires reaching endgame progression in the Valley of Triumph:

  1. Complete the Valley Constellation: Purchase 100% of the nodes from every base Valley of Triumph spirit, including all base emotes, cosmetics, music sheets, and wing buffs unlocked with Ascended Candles.
  2. Clear the Eye of Eden: Complete the realm run and proceed through the rebirth sequence into Orbit.
  3. Summon the Valley Elders: Interact with the Valley of Triumph constellation stone at the central Orbit shrine to summon the twin Elders, Sah and Mek.
  4. Purchase the Mask Node: Open the top of either Elder's friendship tree and spend your Ascended Candles. You can purchase the pointed mask or the rounder variant independently.

How to Repair and Recharge a Broken Mask

Repairing a cracked Elder mask is free and does not cost additional Ascended Candles. You can restore the shield through two methods:

  • Valley Temple Altar: Travel to the end of the Valley of Triumph. Sit at the meditation circle inside the temple before the gates to the Golden Wasteland. The cutscene communion restores your equipped mask, clearing the cracks and restoring the golden glow.
  • Orbit Visit: Returning to Orbit after completing an Eye of Eden run automatically recharges any broken Elder masks you own.

For routine play, recharge the mask during daily candle runs through the Valley of Triumph so the shield remains active for dangerous routes in Eden or the Golden Wasteland.
