Mutating a standard walker into a claw-equipped Crawler allows your horde to scale sheer walls, traverse ceilings, and bypass fortified human positions in Zombie Night Terror. Deploy Crawlers when heavy frontal gunfire, locked security doors, or barricaded choke points make a direct horizontal advance lethal to your main swarm. Before sending a Crawler upward, always anchor your ground horde in a safe holding pattern using an Overlord so trailing walkers do not wander into line of fire or hazards.

Wall Climbing and Surface Traversal Mechanics

Transforming a zombie into a Crawler alters its locomotion properties, treating connected vertical and overhead surfaces as continuous walking paths.

  • Automatic Climbing: Crawlers begin scaling vertical surfaces automatically upon touching a wall, continuing along adjacent ceilings unless redirected or blocked by level boundaries.
  • Ceiling Traversal: Crawlers cling to overhead architecture, allowing full inverted movement across rooms to position above unaware survivors.
  • Ledge Transitions: Upon reaching the edge of a flat roof or floor, the Crawler transitions back to standard horizontal walking unless given a downward vault or climb command.
  • Extended Leaping: Crawlers possess longer jump arcs than basic walkers, enabling them to leap across gaps between broken walkways and severed building ledges without artificial ramps.

Ceiling Ambushes and Barricade Bypasses

Frontal assaults against fortified survivors armed with shotguns or automatic weapons often wipe out large groups of basic walkers. Crawlers bypass these cones of fire entirely through overhead routing.

  1. Locate an Infiltration Shaft: Identify an exterior wall, interior elevator shaft, or open vent running adjacent to the defensive perimeter.
  2. Crawl Above Defender Line of Sight: Scale the wall and walk across the ceiling until positioned directly behind or above the fortified human line. Human defenders track horizontally and do not guard inverted angles above them.
  3. Execute a Ceiling Drop: Trigger a jump or drop command while directly over the target. The Crawler detaches and lands on the human's back, initiating an immediate bite before the defender can pivot or fire.
  4. Expand from Within: Use newly infected survivors behind the barricade to collapse the defensive line from the rear.

Coordinating Crawlers with Ground Overlords

Micro-managing an agile Crawler leaves trailing horde units vulnerable if they are left unattended. Ground walkers will walk into fatal drops, automated turrets, or civilian firing lanes unless locked in place.

Establish an Overlord at the base of the infiltration area before applying the Crawler mutation. The Overlord projects a directional boundary that keeps the swarm pacing in a secure pocket. Once your Crawler clears the defenders or activates a switch opening the path, dismiss or alter the Overlord's zone to let the full swarm advance.

Flanking Elevated Snipers and Rooftop Guards

Survivors positioned on high ground, fire escapes, or rooftops pick off approaching infected before melee range can be reached. Crawlers are the primary counter to these elevated perches because standard walkers cannot jump high enough to engage them.

Never send a Crawler up a wall directly inside a sniper's forward field of view, as sustained rifle fire will eliminate it during the ascent. Instead, route the Crawler along blind surfaces:

  • External drainpipes and blind alley corners.
  • Rear building walls away from window sightlines.
  • Interior ventilation systems that exit directly onto the roof.

Once the Crawler pulls itself over the roof lip behind the guard, close the remaining distance immediately to infect the sniper before they can swap weapons or reposition.

Managing DNA and Environmental Hazards

Mutating Crawlers expends DNA reserves, so transform only the exact number needed to open a route or eliminate a critical target. Over-mutating climbing specialists drains resources required for horde buffs and leaves fewer bodies to overrun large rooms once doors open. In most puzzles, a single Crawler can navigate the perimeter and trigger the bypass mechanism.

Vertical and ceiling corridors frequently contain lethal industrial hazards. Check your planned route for:

  • Live Electrical Panels: Electrified walls or ceiling grids kill Crawlers instantly on contact.
  • Toxic Vents and Steam: Timed exhaust clouds destroy climbing units caught in their flow.
  • Industrial Machinery: Ceiling grinders and rotating fans require precise drop commands onto intermediate beams to bypass safely.

If an environmental hazard blocks an overhead route, drop the Crawler to a safe intermediate surface below the hazard, walk past the dangerous zone, and climb back up on clear structural surfaces.
