To make your troops stronger in Viking Rise, you must upgrade four key systems: Academy military research, training building tiers, hero leadership synergies, and Tribe bonuses. Increasing raw unit count is not enough to win difficult battles; improving your core combat multipliers—Attack, Defense, and Health—ensures your marches trade efficiently against hostile players and neutral world monsters.

1. Prioritize Military Research in the Academy

The Military tech tree in your Academy provides permanent attribute multipliers to every unit you field. While economic research speeds up resource production, military nodes directly boost the base statistics of your four core unit types: Infantry, Pikemen, Archers, and Porters/Cavalry.

When planning your Academy investments, follow this priority order:

  1. Basic Stat Nodes: Upgrade Attack and Defense for your primary unit type first.
  2. Tier Milestones: Unlock higher troop tiers (Tier 2, Tier 3, and Tier 4) as soon as building prerequisites allow.
  3. Advanced Military Nodes: Invest in Troop Health, Lethality, and March Speed to maximize combat performance.

Specializing in one troop type early yields better results than spreading resources evenly across all branches. If your primary combat commanders focus on Infantry or Pikemen, invest your Scholar capacity and gold into those branches first. Every upgraded node permanently boosts newly trained and existing units without adding ongoing maintenance costs.

2. Upgrade Training Buildings and Promote Units

A unit's base attributes depend heavily on its tier. Upgrading your Barracks, Archery Ranges, and Paddock unlocks advanced unit tiers and expands both training batch capacity and training speed.

Troop Tier MilestonePrimary RoleKey Progression Requirement
Tier 1 (T1)Low-cost training, early gathering, and scoutingStarter settlement buildings
Tier 2 (T2)Early monster hunting and basic PvE clearingUpgraded military training camps
Tier 3 (T3)Mid-game PvP battles and alliance rally supportAcademy and camp milestone levels
Tier 4 (T4)Frontline combat durability and high base statsHigh-level Chief Hall and Military research

Do not leave low-tier units sitting idle once you unlock a new tier. Use the troop promotion feature at your training grounds to upgrade lower-tier soldiers into your highest unlocked tier. Promoting units takes less time and fewer resources than training high-tier units from scratch, allowing you to modernize your standing army rapidly.

3. Align Hero Skills, Talents, and Gear

Troop performance scales directly with the heroes leading them. Marching an army under a commander whose skills do not match the assigned unit type forfeits significant passive multipliers.

  • Match Hero Types to Troop Compositions: Deploy heroes with troops that match their specialization. An Infantry specialist activates unique attack bonuses, damage reduction, and rage-generation perks only when leading predominantly Infantry formations.
  • Invest Skill Manuals Selectively: Concentrate duplicate hero shards and skill manuals on your primary combat leaders rather than spreading them across gathering or administrative heroes.
  • Path for Survivability in Talent Trees: Allocate hero talent points toward flat Health and Defense nodes to improve front-line staying power.
  • Equip Commander Gear: Equip high-rarity hero gear to add percentage-based combat multipliers to the units under that hero's command.

4. Stack Tribe Tech and Territory Buffs

Individual settlement progression accounts for only a portion of your army's strength; Tribe (alliance) technologies and territory control provide critical additional bonuses.

  • Donate to Tribe Research: Regularly donate food, wood, and gold to active Tribe military projects to unlock shared alliance bonuses for Attack, Defense, March Speed, and Rally Capacity.
  • Fight on Allied Territory: Capturing and defending territory structures such as Shrines and Sanctuaries grants global or regional combat advantages. Marches fighting within allied territory benefit from these structural bonuses.
  • Activate Combat Buffs Before Skirmishes: Prior to challenging rival settlements or contesting major objectives, activate temporary Chief buffs and inventory attack/defense items to maximize your army's effective stats.
